Covid prevention: stay in your own travel group

Recommended Posts

We just returned from a wonderful transatlantic cruise on the Anthem of the Seas. By day six, the CC roll call group started to report their positive COVID cases and then their experiences. Two days later, the Captain said there were nine documented cases onboard.  By the end of the cruise, it was obvious that COVID and/or upper respiratory infections were becoming pretty common.

As the cases and coughing climbed, we began to see the wisdom of staying within your own travel group. We always joined the CC roll call gatherings but didn't on this trip. mostly because we were last minute bookers.  I now see that was a blessing in disguise as we managed to avoid infections. We did play card games with our dining partners who were also non-symptomatic.  Early on, we were sharing dining tables in the MDR, but stopped that when we became aware of infections.

So, for the time being, it is likely a good idea to avoid the usual roll call fun. This is sad because we love getting to know new people onboard.  Touching the same dice and cards and being in close proximity just isn't a good idea now. Of course, if you go on tour buses, you are probably more likely to pick up the illnesses there.

Unfortunately, I think this is good advice at this point in time.  If you followed the adventures of WCB on the HAL Message Board, that is basically what they did for their many weeks of cruising this Winter.  Mary Ann still became positive early in the cruise and had to quarantine with her husband at a hotel in Fort Lauderdale.  But, they did return to the Nieuw Statendam and continued cruising, but, it seemed to me, they were much less "social" than what they often are.
