MommyOTwins Posted May 23, 2022 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2022 We are sailing on a cruise with an evening stop in Victoria (7pm to midnight) I just watched a vlog where they saw various bars on the ship (Discovery Princess) were closed due to Canadian port rules. Is that true, or was it just staffing issues and someone blamed it on the port, or the vlogger misunderstood? We have dinner reservations at a specialty restaurant on Victoria night, and it would stink to not get to have one of their nice drinks with dinner. cruiseryyc Posted May 23, 2022 #2 Share Posted May 23, 2022 I'm sure you will still be able to get a drink with your dinner. Better yet - get off the ship and have dinner in one of the many lovely restaurants or brew pubs in Victoria.
1025cruise Posted May 23, 2022 #3 Share Posted May 23, 2022 My knowledge is from many years ago, but I believe Canadian law only allowed for a single bar to be open per deck. However, you will still be able to get a beverage if you choose.
Rare martincath Posted May 23, 2022 #4 Share Posted May 23, 2022 I've heard this over and over, yet it's definitely not a Provincial Law (liquor is controlled at the province level), nor can I find any Federal booze control statutes, that allow ONE bar. It's either a 'you can legally serve booze X to Y hours' or 'you cannot' - so my strong suspicion is that the lines use this as an easy excuse to only staff a single bar, and anyone complaining is told to blame Canada... Given that lots of folks get off in port, I've yet to experience more than a short delay - if you order liquor somewhere else, a staff member can go get it as the one 'legal' bar and bring it to you. But personally, given that Victoria is both one of the world's better beer cities (at least in terms of Real Ales) and the often-short-stops do not allow time to do much else in the evenings, wandering off for a swift bevvy or three is well worth doing ;-)
carbon Posted May 24, 2022 #5 Share Posted May 24, 2022 I have the bevarage package and would like to have a beverage on the ship. Since the Crown is having propulsion and plumbing problems I hope this will not be another issue.
