Does anyone have experience with the pre or post land programs with luggage restrictions ?

I have two cruise with them the pre Hong Kong one to the Pandas and the cape town one

what defines small here a Carryon? Or a checked bag and can’t you bring a backpack

Be sure to pack a small separate bag for the days in Chengdu. Your excess luggage will be stored at the hotel in Hong Kong, where you will be reunited with it on Day 4.

on this one it is more specific a checked bag but can you bring a carryon or back also ?

After breakfast and check out, meet your local escort and walk to the terminal to check in for a flight to Kasane, Botswana.

As guests may only bring one piece of checked luggage per person, excess luggage (1 piece per person) will be shipped via courier to Cape Town where you will be re-united with it on Day 5. Make sure to pack accordingly and bring any medications and cruise documents with you.

We had the issue a couple of times.  Once was on a post-cruise safari involving a flight to Jo'burg and then another onward flight on a smaller plane to Hoedspruit (sp?).  I believe the restrictions were made by the airlines, so it's worth checking the details with them (if you can identify the airline involved of course).  The other was a post-cruise to Machu Picchu, organised independently of Regent but with similar luggage restrictions set by airline and other transportation companies.  In both cases, it was rather nerve wracking to leave bits of luggage here and there, but on each occasion with was with a person/company we trusted - the land agent in Jo'burg and A&K in Peru (where at one point we had bags in three different places).  Thankfully, it all came together exactly as planned, for as we realised, we weren't the first to require such services on either occasion.  I can't tell you how relieved we were though!!

As Gilly pointed out, do you have any idea about the plane being used?  Commercial plane,  or 8 seats?  In Africa,  the 8 seater will have enough space in the cabin for you, your camera and something very small - maybe.    Also,  many times,  the “checked” luggage must be soft sided,  like a duffel bag or back pack, not a wheeled carryon.   If commercial plane,  the carryon will be checked, I would think (no overhead space).  Hence,  your medicine and important papers would have to be on you.  Leave the jewels home!

We are on a pre-cruise to Victoria Falls, before starting our Cape Town cruise. Our TA sent us the latest itinerary and luggage info. Our instructions define the size and weight of both of the bags we can have -one checked and one carry-on.  I would consider DH camera to be part of his one carry-on.
Trying to find the plane being used is a good idea, but also a challenge. From the luggage restrictions I am leaning to the conclusion our plane is larger rather than smaller.  Nothing talking about soft sided checked luggage, but a blurb about the airline can impose fee it bag too big.
We are also limited to one each bag that we leave with a representative to take to the ship.

Are you able to share what the size and weight restrictions are in the letter.  I'll be curious to see how you tour is, please also share!
