Just curious of anyones experience with your cruise line traveling to Canada where you tested positive when you were getting close to disembarking in a Canada port per canada govt site they have a 10 day quarantine/ isolation period vs 5 days like the US. So what happens when you disembark? Are you met by the Canadian authorities to complete your isolation, does your cruise line make arrangements for you I,e hotel, airline changes, is anyone checking that you are isolating? Ā To fly home to US you are not required to provide a negative test, how formal is the process now?Ā
Ā

thanks in advance for any response.Ā

There's a fair few tales of quarantine over on the West Coast & Alaska boards.

Ā

Long story short:

  • Yes, you need to fulfil 10 days of isolation;
  • Your vessel will report you and all other +ve pax to government as they are legally required to do, including the date you were tested so how many days remain in your 10 are known;
  • All cruiselines now seem to have pax book their own hotels then refund them the room (with a price cap, check with your line!) plus a per diem for food - in theory the line is still on the hook by law, so if you refuse point-blank to book anything they have to find you a place... but why not pick somewhere nice and bung it on a credit card rather than whatever the cheapest room they can find you is?;
  • Flight-wise if you booked through the line they will rebook, but if you booked by yourself it's up to you to rearrange and they have no requirement to refund any change fees;
  • Canadian authorities do not actively police your continued presence inside your hotel room but it is illegal to use any public transit during your isolation period, and they do make random calls to your ArriveCAN contact number to check in on your location;
  • Folks heading to isolation do get bussed there from the pier by the cruiseline - so far all reports I've heard are that the +ve disembark last and take 'milk run' coaches that drop off at various hotels;
  • If you want to return home to do your quarantine, a car rental is legal (only you, no exposure to other folks on bus/train/plane, so no breaking of Canadian laws - whether it's legal in your home state and any you drive through to move around while +ve you should check locally) but you need to ask permission to leave first (there's an online form, for this and also if you have to change your isolation location)
  • Cruiselines do not have to pay for a car rental... the cost of a one-way rental even to Seattle is a bit mental this year between reduced traveler numbers and difficulty of fleets acquiring more cars - so why not just enjoy an extended vacation, with superb local food delivered to you by doordash etc.? You can eat pretty damn well on a hundred bucks per day here (you might get more from a fancy line, but that's what Princess is offering)
  • Failure to isolate, to notify authorities of your isolation location, to ask before leaving etc. are all violations of Canadian law - we do not have exit checks so you will be able to sneak away without being caught, but since your name, passport etc. info is all on file the violation will be noted so expect some follow-up phone calls asking why you did not confirm where you were isolating...
  • Future Canadian visits, should you violate our laws by sneaking out of quarantine, risk being you refused entry or at the very least facing some extra questions... hopefully not "Would you enjoy seeing how much gentler CBSA agents are compared to CBP while we check your colon for smuggled items Sir or Madam?" šŸ˜‰

Also keep in mind that one way rentals over the border are subject to each rental company's stated availability-- they have the right to say no and often will limit the number of these rentals as they present logistical challenges on the back end for them. And they can be astronomically more expensive than a usual rental.Ā
