bunzini Posted November 14, 2022 #1 Share Posted November 14, 2022 Has anyone visited the turtle centre? Curious if you found it worth while?
Capt_BJ Posted November 14, 2022 #2 Share Posted November 14, 2022 (edited) you checked the web site? https://www.turtle.ky/ Today it is more like a waterpark that has turtles but generally gets good reviews the history of the place does bother some folks but that is long gone history ..... <the place was originally a turtle farm ... raising turtle for food .... talking 60's here. {my parents visited the farm in 1969} The Cayman government invested a lot of $$ into the project as in Cayman turtle was a staple food and many other islands too .... there was a market. Then the US banned turtle products and a major market was GONE. The 'farm' struggled along for many more years until eventually being reborn as a water park featuring turtles. In the 'tween years there were turtle releases from breeding ... and food sales. Last time I was in Cayman you could still find a place or two with turtle on the menu ..... but it is unusual> Edited November 14, 2022 by Capt_BJ
bunzini Posted November 15, 2022 Author #3 Share Posted November 15, 2022 I did check it and wondered since it did look more like a waterpark. I guess I was hoping someone had been there and also hoping the park was more informative than waterpark.
bjkTX Posted March 25, 2023 #4 Share Posted March 25, 2023 We were there as part of a tour in December and it was actually quite interesting - although I have to admit the banter and ad libs from the tour guide helped a lot. There really was a lot to see and experience and we saw very little to nothing that would make me think water park. There were places people could get in the water as I recall (though very few did) but it wasn't a main attraction. We are a couple of 70+ seniors and we enjoyed it - I think younger kids would as well 🙂
thesnoopster2 Posted March 25, 2023 #5 Share Posted March 25, 2023 I walked on a few years ago. It was across the street from the Dolphins. I finished up and just walked over and didn't pay or anything. Thought it was cool, but nothing earth shattering.
39august Posted April 3, 2023 #6 Share Posted April 3, 2023 So do they still sell turtles for food markets? I ate turtle once many years ago and found it very good to my taste.
