edinburgher Posted March 16, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 16, 2023 (edited) Also taking suggestions for our first visit to SPLIT It really isn't necessary to have an excursion going out of Split as the city itself has more than enough of interest for a full day especially if it is to be your first visit. You can read all of the previous threads about Split very easily and I suggest you do that as there have been a number of suggestions made in them.Much faster and easier than back paging multiple times, Simply go to the general OTHER MEDITERRANEAN PORTS FORUM, (not an individual thread) and enter SPLIT in the SEARCH BOX under your user name. Hit the little spy glass and results should appear in less than a minute ready for you to read through.. You will read that TROGIR is the closest out of town side trip. Also look at Tourist Information websites for Split for ideas , maps etc. it is a really interesting and attractive city to visit and a favourite of many cruise pax, not least because you can reach the historic area and the Riva (promenade) in less than 10 minutes on foot from the docking area.. And you could internet search something like "Split for kids" as you may get something to interest them that way. realnice46 Posted March 19, 2023 #4 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Krka Waterfalls are spectacular. Viator offers tour from Split but it depends on long you have in port. Does your cruise line offer a tour?.
bianks Posted March 19, 2023 Author #5 Share Posted March 19, 2023 we will DEFINITELY be visiting the Krka waterfalls but doing that from Zadar as it looks like it is cheaper and closer than from Split. Therefore we are now just looking at excursions we can do from SPLIT. :)
bianks Posted March 19, 2023 Author #6 Share Posted March 19, 2023 is the water warm at the Krka falls? it Plitvice a more pituresque place? I did read that swimming is no longer allowed there? is it still worth the longer drive to get to vs Krka?
Rare cruisemom42 Posted March 20, 2023 #7 Share Posted March 20, 2023 5 hours ago, bianks said: Therefore we are now just looking at excursions we can do from SPLIT. 🙂 In Split I would suggest just staying in the old town (which is easily reached). Split originated as the "retirement" palace of a Roman emperor, Diocletian. He built the place as his own personal palace but modeled it after a Roman army fort -- well defended with walls that can still be walked around. If your children knew some of the history they might enjoy doing a tour of the "basements" of the palace, finding bits and pieces of the old Roman palace that have been taken over and transformed into shops, hotels, restaurants. Or walk around the outside of the walls looking for the four symmetrically placed gates (still there today). Local tours of the palace are regularly offered from the square just in front of the palace entrance. The front of the palace (where the emperor lived) faced the sea. Today there is a lovely promenade there, nice place to sit and have a cool drink or an ice cream.
bianks Posted March 27, 2023 Author #8 Share Posted March 27, 2023 if we had the option to visit Krka from Zadar or Split, would you choose to do it from Zadar to free up other options for Split or VICE VERSA?
edinburgher Posted March 28, 2023 #9 Share Posted March 28, 2023 (edited) if we had the option to visit Krka from Zadar or Split, would you choose to do it from Zadar to free up other options for Split or VICE VERSA? We have visited Split three times and never struggled to find sightseeing options. OTOH, having visited Zadar only once, we didn't find too much of interest to us for a full day, and should we ever return, would look at out of town excursions. Others may disagree. bianks Posted March 28, 2023 Author #10 Share Posted March 28, 2023 so given what you have said if others were to also agree, it would probably make sense for us to take the Krka excursion from Zadar to free up other options in Split... ?
edinburgher Posted March 29, 2023 #11 Share Posted March 29, 2023 (edited) It is what we would do but you must choose which is best for you. And the promenade and historic centre of Split is an easy max 15 minute flat walk from the dock. We had expected to be docked in Zadar town almost next to the Sea Organ, but instead found ourselves at an out of town cruise terminal with shuttle buses to get us into town. They dropped off and picked up from that same location very close to the Sea Organ and promenade, no more than 5 minutes on foot from the centre of town. bianks Posted March 30, 2023 Author #12 Share Posted March 30, 2023 can we expect plenty of shuttle busses and taxis around regardless of where NCL docks us?
edinburgher Posted March 30, 2023 #13 Share Posted March 30, 2023 can we expect plenty of shuttle busses and taxis around regardless of where NCL docks us? The shuttle buses were (I think) cruiseline buses. Didnn't notice if there were taxis or not as we used the shuttle both ways.
bianks Posted March 30, 2023 Author #14 Share Posted March 30, 2023 if they are cruiseline busses would they be free for passengers?
edinburgher Posted April 1, 2023 #15 Share Posted April 1, 2023 that would depend on your cruiseline.
