Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2926 Share Posted June 12, 2023 Next we went to the Black powder magazine where the black powder black powder was stored. If you needed black powder you would get a barrel out of there, Take it to shifting room and Get your pouch filled. They had to roll the barrels every day. I believe that was due to humidity.

Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2928 Share Posted June 12, 2023 They have the mock school house next door to the powder magazine. They do that just for the convenience of the tour. It wasn’t really there. It was on the other side of the citadel. On the tour we just walked by the school. So I went back to that one later as well. At that point my guide from earlier was there playing the part of teacher.

Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2932 Share Posted June 12, 2023 The citadel was never attacked. It would be difficult to attack because they would have to get by other forts first and the elevated position of the citadel. when the citadel was built secret tunnels were included. This allowed the placement of mines that could be set off in the event an enemy attempted to dig a trench in the hill.
Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2933 Share Posted June 12, 2023 Another thing I did later. These were built as casemates but the one with beds in it was turned into a long term prison.
Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2934 Share Posted June 12, 2023 These are signal masts. The taller one was commercial - flag of company would go up 5 hours ahead of time so locals would know what boats are coming to town and maybe what goods would soon be available for purchase. Smaller mast was military
Rare Saint Greg Posted June 12, 2023 Author #2935 Share Posted June 12, 2023 (edited) The Noon gun has been fired every day since 1856 It was to Let everyone know it was midday Also was fired 8-9 pm to let soldiers know it’s time to get back to the fort and go to bed. Bagpipers played songs staring at 5:30am and based on the song people around the citadel knew what time it was. 4lbs Of black powder for a 12lb shot Edited June 12, 2023 by Saint Greg
