Vancouver longshoremen’s strike

CD on Orion just announced that the Vancouver longshoremen have voted to strike and will not be handling luggage tomorrow morning as a result.

Folks with early departures will have to schlep their bags off the ship. Viking crew cannot help per local regs.

Not sure why they only announced only early departures have to offload their own bags, as this is a strike, not a temporary work stoppage.

As an aside, they voted yesterday, so the Viking statement that “ we just learned of the strike” is either not accurate or poor monitoring of the situation by Viking.

This news is just a few hours old, so Viking is not playing games. The longshoremen had been on strike for some  time. Some days ago, a government mediator had proposed a settlement and workers had returned to work. The union's "caucus" (unclear what that is, but it's not a full membership vote on the proposed contract) just rejected the offer and workers are back to the picket lines.

 

None of which makes it easier for you on board, but it's been a fluid and surprising turn of events. Hoping for as smooth a disembarkation as possible! 🍺🥌

The Longshoremen were on strike from 1st to 13th July, but returned to work with a tentative agreement. Today, the Union's Executive has voted to reject the tentative agreement, without going to the membership, so the longshoremen are returning to picket line duty.

 

This only happened late this afternoon, so Viking have responded quite quickly.

Good news, as the longshoremen's resumption of strike action has been deemed illegal by the Industrial Relations Board and they have been ordered back to work.

 

They did not provide the required notice of job action, so cannot commence any new job action until Saturday.
