Cannes to Monaco

Hi

 

Has anyone taken the train from Cannes to Monaco before?

 

I'm considering doing this for our port day. I'll be travelling with my toddler so wondering how easy it may be. i.e are there lots of stairs at the stations.

I have not done it yet...We have a cruise booked at the end of October and that is our plan though. It seems simple enough, the train station is within walking distance of the port. I've relied a lot on Rick Steves's travel videos for information. He takes a similar train in his Mediterranean cruise video (at 14:55). We plan on leaving the ship, stopping at this super cute little patisserie for a pastry, then grabbing a train.

Another way of finding out is to google something along the lines of "accessibility at Cannes(or Monaco) train station"

 but be aware that Monaco is really quite hilly and some are very steep, not really ideal for a toddler "toddling" or you having to push a stroller.  You could look at bus routes and free elevators in Monaco before you travel as using these would help you move around.  OTOH, as much of Nice can be explored on flatter ground  you may want to consider switching destination.

 

And trains often have a few steep steps and a handrail to navigate when getting on and off.

 

and as Cannes is a tender point, remember to allow extra time for the journeys between ship and shore.

We are planning on this next month for our sailing.  I’ve already booked the first tender to get us ashore early so that we can be on a train to Monaco in the morning and to ensure lots of time heading back  - we are there until 9 so I want to be back in Cannes by 3/4 at the latest to give some time there as well. 
 

Glad to see others have had this idea as well.  Looking for some posts /. Moments from those who have done this adventure!

We've never travelled from Cannes to Monaco by train.

We live halfway between the two, so we might go to Monaco if my wife wants a pair of Kates or Cannes for dinner and a firework display.

But we leave lots of food out for our cats and don't have a ship to catch.

In theory trains run every 30 minutes and take 68 mins to Monaco and 65 mins to Cannes.

But that doesn't allow for the odd illegal immigrant that has no idea about electric trains and climbs on the roof in Italy and gets grilled en-route to Monaco, or rockfalls in tunnels, landslides out of tunnels and all sorts of other things.

But look out for strikes on the day you visit.

In emergencies there are express buses from Monaco to Nice Airport and Nice Airport to Cannes, lines 80 and 81. Combination of those would take a bit over 2 hours. Otherwise call an UBER!

I have stayed in Nice before (and taken trips both to Monaco and Cannes) and I have taken the train from Cannes to Villefranche during a cruise. It is quite straight-forward and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as long as you have a fairly long day in port and have checked on any planned strikes.

 

Make sure to take your passport when going to Monaco as you will need it for going into the casino (if you want to check it out). I forgot mine in my hotel room...

 

Monaco is fun to visit but there are plenty of other great destinations closer to Cannes, like Eze, Nice, or Villefranche (my favorite). Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Antibes is closer to Cannes by train and is very easy to navigate with a stroller. Since the train is hop on hop off (between closest and farthest station on your ticket) you can stop at Juan Les Pins on your return for toddler friendly beach time.

Thank you for this post. I went to Cannes years ago and can only vaguely remember it. Having a short time there what would you recommend to soak up the atmosphere and get a variety. TIA!

If you have only limited time in Cannes I personally would stay there. You could just soak up the atmosphere. The newer, flat area of town reminds me a bit of Beverly Hills but you could also explore the old part of town with winding streets and a great view (I did not personally have time for this).

If your time isn't extremely short I highly recommend a trip to one of the Iles de Lerins. At least on my Celebrity cruise the boat tours left close to where the ship docked. I took a boat across to Ile Sainte-Marguerite and had a wonderful time!

 

You can tour a small fortress, go on a scenic walk, or swim. A great relaxing day that would even work if it is hot.

Interesting thread.  If you have the time, taking the train to MC is no different than going to Antibes or Nice other than the extra time.  As one who does not enjoy MC, I wonder why,  it whatever floats your boat ☺️
