Getting around Forte-de-France, tours, and beach

Hi. I will be getting on a cruise that starts and ends in Fort-de-France, Martinique in 3 weeks. Is it safe and easy to explore on our own by grabbing a taxi or Uber from the port/cruise terminal? My main interests are visiting the beach in a leisurely way and also taking in some of the city/island highlights. Most tours have very little time at beach so I would rather do a small city tour, a rum factory tour, or other attraction and visit the beach before or after. Any tours or tour operators you recommend? Which beach do you recommend? Also, is it safe to grab a taxi from airport to the port terminal or do we need to book a private transfer ahead of time?

Take the tour including the town, history, sights, then a distillery.  Ask to be dropped off at a local beach, with a short cab ride back to one’s base.
