jonthomas Posted March 4 #1 Share Posted March 4 We will be in Alaska on the Regatta in September, they changed Wrangel for Klawock. We had already booked Whale watching out of Victoria but the new port, Klawock also offers a whale watching tour. Out of which port is whale watching better? Rare mauibabes Posted March 4 #2 Share Posted March 4 We have not had much luck with Alaska whale watches, over three trips and in July, August and September. . We just got back from Maui and the Humpbacks are over there (well over 1,000) delivering calf’s. They leave Alaska and head 2000 miles to the warm weather birthing grounds in Mexico and Hawaii. Do a little more research about whales in Alaska in September. Orcas and other whales may still be there in sufficient quantity. The Humpbacks in Maui are pretty spectacular and the weather is A LOT BETTER. Mauibabes
gaeltrav Posted March 5 #3 Share Posted March 5 We were on the Regatta last September and did a whale watching tour with Eagle tours in Victoria. It was fantastic and we saw multiple humpback whales as well as seals, and Orcas Have a look at their website
no fuss travel Posted March 5 #4 Share Posted March 5 The whales around Victoria are usually more plentiful than earlier months. They seem to be arriving back to the area later and later each year. Also the waters are more protected so you have less chance of having a rough ride. We watch the whales go by from our front yard and see lots of whale watching boats go by. You can see Minke, Orcas (actually dolphins) or humpback. With the humpback if the whale watchers are annoying them, they will take a deep dive and usually do not come up for a long time after well away from the whale watchers. If the Orcas are flapping their tails, they will then take a long dive to get away from being hassled. They do not stay as long under the water as humpbacks.
jonthomas Posted March 6 Author #5 Share Posted March 6 We will stick to our whale watching tour out of Victoria, it is 3.5 hours, the one from Klawock is 2.5. Thank you to all responders.
