Alaska excursion opinions

Hi, I’ll be on the grand in September and I looking to get opinions on a couple of excursions I’m looking at. Although it won't be my or my mom's first time, the third person we are traveling with will be a first-time cruiser and visitor to Alaska and she’ll be using a walker that does fold up.

The first one is the “Yukon rail and bus excursion by Chilkoot Charters”, I’ve already seen a lot of people recommend this company and they have a lot of good reviews, but my question is, of our party members have a walker and I was wondering if there’s room for that on the smaller bus as opposed to the motorcoach, if anybody has an experience doing a Chilkoot charter tour with a walker or a person with lower mobility is love to hear it.

The the is the “local connections: Whale watching, Mendenhall glacier, photo Safari designed by Alaskan photographer”,  I’d be planning on doing this on my own. For those who have done it was way it and did you think it’s worth it? As an amateur photographer, this one caught my eye and I enjoyed the Skagway one when I did it back in 2019.

Thank you in advance.

In Skagway truly suggest you simply rent a car and drive to Carcross, Dyea and see everything in Skagway.  Lots cheaper and you can see everything.   You can get the car and pick up the others.

The photo excursions is nice if the weather cooperates.

if it was just me, I would do that, a tour guide is a must. Plus I’d be the one driving and I really don’t want to have to drive while on vacation and personally like tour guides.

There is definitely an advantage to letting someone else do the driving so you can relax and enjoy the scenery. Plus you get the best of both - the train trip and the drive.

We have toured with Chilkoot Charters a couple of times and they deserve the great reviews they get. I would suggest you call them and ask about the space for the walker. I seem to recall that the large touring van they use has space in a back trunk area that would probably easily hold a fold up walker.
