Picture-A-Week 2024 - Week 19

Recommended Posts

Pictures taken between Monday, May 6 and Sunday, May 12.

Do yourself a favor. Take a few minutes off from fighting the good fight and take a photo of something that makes you smile.

Post it here and it might make someone else smile.

Win/Win.

Rules: See above

That's it. This isn't a contest.

All photos taken this week are welcome (not just cruising).

Prizes will not be awarded. Discovering the joy of photography is the prize.

The idea is to get folks out using their cameras for more than vacations and toddler birthdays.

Post one. Post many. Up to you.

Have fun with your camera and share your fun with others!

We went to Madison, Wisconsin last night to see the aurora.  We live on the south side of Chicago so the city lights are bright in the northern sky.  If you drive north of Chicago, you have the city lights of Milwaukee in the northern sky.  So off to Madison we went.  Got there at midnight and watched/photographed the spectacle until 3 am.  While dim with muted colors to the naked eye (compared to photographs), the aurora was everywhere in the sky including directly overhead.  It was constantly changing shapes and colors.  It was wild.

This odd shot is taken of the aurora directly overhead (hence no foreground objects--just stars).

Mother's Day 2024 was a two-day celebration. The family gathered on Saturday for food and general hanging around at the family entertainment compound (our back yard). There was brunch food, Bellinis and much laughter. However, Sunday morning was the main event. Our family and friends went up the hill to Pastor Dan's church and attended one of his very informational sermons for Mother’s Day. You’re wondering why the whole family tagged along? It wasn’t just because it was Mother’s Day and Kim is arguably the best ever. It was because she wanted the two of us to be baptized on Mother’s Day and how could I deny the Love of My Life? Not sure if loud cheering and clapping is proper at a baptism, but that’s how our family rolls.

I can only say to all of you who got to see the northern lights...you stink!  Pretty much no chance of getting them this far south!

Here was the weekend wetlands walk for this photo thread period:

Basilisk lizard popping up to say hello:

Eastern screech owl with that intense stare:

The very adorable, freshly hatched, black-necked stilt chick:

A female wood duck sitting on her eggs in a hollowed out palm tree stump:

The last of the migrators to pass through on its way north - the male blackpoll warbler:

Prehistoric looking wood stork flying over with some fresh branches for the nest, which already has growing chicks in it:

Young green heron, finally reaching adult colors and the ability to fly:
