Civitavecchia day trip (not to Rome!)

Recommended Posts

Our August Oceania cruise starts and ends in Rome.  The last full day of the cruise is an overnight in

Civitavecchia.  Since we wil have spent three days pre-cruise in Rome, and will be transferring from the port back to Rome the next day, we have no desire to do a day trip to Rome.  We are willing to jump on a train to see other parts of Italy that are do-able.  I don't know that there is a specific "all aboard" time since we are overnighting so length of time may not be an issue.

Any ideas/suggestions about where we could spend the day?

A close option is Tarquinia, which you would reach by bus from Civitavecchia.

Since you don't have to race back to the ship, one option we often discourage is open to you, Tivoli.  The 7:44 train from Civitavecchia gets you to Tivoli at 9:50 (following one change of train at Rome Termini).

Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio, sometimes you can find a tour that includes both.

We did a private tour with Rome Cabs (actually - Stefano Rome Tours) that combined both several years ago.  It was perfect as we, like the OP, had done Rome pre-cruise and didn't wanted something different before heading the the airport hotel for the night for a flight home the next day.  They picked us up at the port, took us, and our cruise luggage, to both Orvieto, Civita and a couple other places before returning us back to FCO that evening.  Great day!
