Port or Starboard side on Western Transatlantic cruise

Recommended Posts

We are taking a western transatlantic cruise in the fall. Is it better to have a balcony on the port side or starboard side of the ship? We do enjoy watching the sunset or sunrise on our balcony, with coffee or drink in hand.

It's all about the position of the sun in relation to the ship.  On west bound transatlantic cruises the sun will always be to the south which means mostly on the port side. Sunrise will be aft, sunset forward. Plot your route and you will get a good idea of how the sun will be positioned in relation to your voyage.

I did a TA from Southampton last year. The first few days we were heading south, so starboard side got the best sunsets (if it wasn’t too cloudy) and I was on the port side for some great sunrises. Once past the Azores and heading west/ south west I got better afternoon Sun and sunsets.
