Dog sledding in March

Recommended Posts

Waitlist - no idea. Is there an option when trying to book to waitlist?

Private - possibly, do a Google search for the port area that you are interested in.

Friend is on Aurora in March. All the dog sled excursions are booked up already.

can she be put on waitlist or book privately?

Be aware you will need to make sure you are insured for dog sledding as it would not normally be covered on a standard travel insurance policy.  You may need to pay a supplement.  Chances are the supplier, even of the P&O excursion supplier,  will want you to sign a waiver, so they do not take responsibility if you are injured.

It is something we have not done and probably won't do now, but I know people who have and they really enjoyed it.

You can go to the "ports if call" section of these boards or.perhaps forums of CC's sister site Trip Advisor, where you may be able to get recommendations for private trips others have done and would recommend.

We did not have to sign anything when we went dog sledging a few years ago

Perhaps P&O do not then, but we have been making a few excursions bookings in the last week or two and there is an extra section at the bottom of a number of them, regards activity trips, even seems to include some walking tours, so the warnings are there and perhaps that is considered enough.  We have been asked to sign a waiver on another cruise line for something far more sedate than dog sledding.

Most travel insurances do not cover activities such as dog sledding though, so very worthwhile checking policies etc.  which is the point I was making.   It is easy not to realise that and be caught out if there is an injury.  Much better to just check exactly what insurance policies do cover as well as the T&C's for the excursions.  We always make a printout of all T&C's.

Many people do not check such things and admittedly most of the time no problems will arise, but always the possibility something could go wrong, which could cause really major problems.

Unless you are doing dog sledge racing or going on a long cross country sled you stand more chance of being injured on the coach getting to the where the sledging is taking place than you do whilst actually dog sledging.

My friends on Aurora last March did the dog sledding privately. Was a much better experience than the P&O offering apparently.

Quite possibly and can say similar for virtually all insurance.  Depends on the view of insurance by individuals, but most people would want to be insured in case something does happen and they cannot get medical treatment unless they pay loads of money themselves.  What matters is the policy concerned, not the users view of whether it should apply, or not.

Personal choice - yes.

The insurance issue on dog sledding is interesting - I investigated earlier this year for some friends who were travelling on a land based ski holiday to Canada.  No two companies were the same, although most did cover it albeit with some provisos.

Nationwide just state dog sledding covered with no other wording, Staysure state Dog sledging* (only when driven by a professional driver provided by the organiser) is covered, Good to Go consider dog sledging as a B grade hazardous activity and require an extra premium, Post Office cover for dog sledding is only covered under winter sports cover with a local driver or mushers, Admiral again extra premium and winter sports cover and the list goes on.

Most definitely for some travel policies you will need to have winter sports cover at the very minimum to be covered and in a lot of cases purchase an "extreme sports" upgrade as well.

A lot of the Canadian sledge companies offered the chance to actually become the mushers and drive the sled and under most policies you were not covered if doing this. Assumedly if you purchase the extreme sports cover you will get more in depth cover.
