Best excursions in Nuuk?

Recommended Posts

We’re currently on the HAL Zuiderdam and were told we’d miss the two Greenland ports due to ice but will be in Nuuk on July 10th.

Anyone suggest any non-ship tours and tour companies they’ve used or recommend for Nuuk? We’re scheduled to be there from 8 AM to 11 PM. Thanks for any help!

Should you only get disappointing replies, if you have not already done so, you may need to use the CC search tool to find past threads containing the word Nuuk in case there is some helpful info within one or two.  I say "disappointing" as Nuuk, despite being the capital, is the same as other towns and settlements in Greenland, in that with almost no (or none) connecting roads at all, most journeys are by sea or air so your excursions would be by sea or air. Or try general internet searching for "tours from Nuuk" or similar. There would be no need for any kind of "Nuuk walking tour" as it is easy to DIY.

We docked in a very ugly commercial port, but there were ship shuttle buses which took us from there over the hill to the more attractive and historic Colonial Port where we bought a couple of souvenirs from "ladies with tables", strolled the tiny area around that port, incidentally  the most historic, and visited the National Museum. The Cathedral was closed that day. In the main part of town we window shopped on  proper shopping streets, (the only port stop in Greenland where we saw recognisable shopping streets,)and  used WiFi at the public library

Unsure if any of the above was helpful or not, but it was all I could offer although others can maybe add to it.

Thanks for acknowledging as so many don't. Fingers crossed for you that others will have some ideas to contribute, but in the meantime did you try the local Tourist Info website visitnuuk  or Tripadvisor or any other websites for ideas?

Would also like to mention that Nuuk was the only Greenland port of call where we saw a small number of locals begging, and/or maybe suffering from substance or alcohol abuse. Didn't give us any cause for concern for our personal safety, but we did notice.

If the weather is miserable (even if it isn't) the national museum is worth a visit and not too expensive. We had a very drizzly, wet day in Nuuk last September and this was a welcome relief!

You can also walk north up the coastline a bit (about 10 minutes) to get a nice viewpoint and photo of the colourful houses in Nuuk if the weather is nice. That area in general is a nice bit to walkaround away from the more 'industrial' town centre.

One traveller we met up with had taken the bus (number 1 route) to get a circular tour of the city - which I think took around a hour for a return trip.

I wanted to post a follow up that if anyone has a cruise stop in Nuuk, I’d highly recommend doing a 3 hour whale watching trip with Greenland cruises. We saw tons of whales, lots of icebergs and even stopped at a beautiful waterfall to get some ice cold glacial water that was delicious. And it was only $120 per person. I can’t say enough good things about this excursion. Here is a link to it:

This looks great! I have a couple questions: How did you get from the cruise terminal to Colonial Harbour Tourist Pontoon? What month did you go?  Your photos are awesome!

We were there just about 10 days ago (July 2024).The company is so cool they came and picked us up and dropped us off via their boat so we only had to walk across the pier (3 minute walk) to start the tour. If you're ever in Nuuk, book with them, they were great!

Thanks for the tip on the whale watching tour.  We are considering this for next year.  Did you reach out directly in reference to being picked up at the pier?

Thanks again for the info.  We can’t wait to sail there. 🙂

We just did this Fjord Safari tour - booked through the cruise line, but the tour guide gave me her card with the company details

     Sumutgreenland.gl

It was a great tour, small group, lovely scenery, waterfall, icebergs and whales

Yes, we reached out directly to them to ask how we can get to them to start the tour and that’s when they offered to pick us up at our pier. Hope it works out for you. You will love this tour and Greenland!
