Skagway - White Pass Railway

How difficult is it to get a reservation for the White Pass Railway separate from a cruise line?  We'd like to try to ride it but would prefer to do it at a different time than when the cruise offers it.

Do try to do the longer excursion up into the Yukon as the shorter round trip train journey is only part of the route. Ship shorex offer this and the trip is memorable.😁

You can attempt booking direct, but one thing to keep in mind is that for ship's excursions, you board the train at the ship. Booked independently, you need to get to the ticket office.

The longest of the docks - the Railroad Dock - no longer has any railroad tracks. Because of the danger of rockslides passengers from ships at the aft position must take shuttle buses to the shore and those from ships in the forward position have to take tenders.  I remember the days when you could step off the gangway and the train was right there.  But it is still closer to get a dedicated train than going into town.

 

We have always taken the excursion booked with the cruise line, but I have noticed that some of the trains that depart from the station also stop at Skagway Junction where the rail line that goes to  and from the head of Railroad Dock meets the station track.  If booking independently it might be worth an enquiry.  The town station, however, isn't far from any of the three docks.

Which is just a short walk from where the train boards ship excursions. Skagway is tiny, there is no long walk anywhere there.
