We rented a small speedboat in Catania for half a day.  Brought a little picnic, cruised around the sea; it was a fabulous experience.

Valletta is a fabulous place no need for a guide. Head up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens to see the gun salute, take a harbour cruise, or book a tour underneath the city to see how the citizens lived during the bombardment during WW11. It is a small city easy to cover on foot and English is widely spoken.

Croatia again not sure where you are going but we visited six ports and didn't need a guide at all. Print a map before you go have a plan then head off down a back street to find a local bar and a friendly cat.
