Has this happened to you?

It has not happened to me, but I have read other posts about getting bumped.

1. It usually happens to people whose addresses are within driving distance to the port.

2. They have been given a choice to change dates.

3. They were compensated for their troubles with shipboard credits.

In an emergency situation I suspect anything can happen & I certainly would understand. And Katrina was a terrible emergency for all those people.

However, to be bumped for a charter group after you made a reservation months ago is just wrong.

HHHmmm....interesting. Just another reason to be annoyed by large groups who already think they have the ship to themselves....LOL:rolleyes:

The one thing I learned from that article was to never book airfare thru the cruiseline!

The only bump I got was due to FEMA but Carnival made it right :p

Same here, was to go on Elation out of Galveston last year and ended up going on Conquest instead. Not a bad deal after all, and yes, Carnival did make it right. Hey, that's a good idea.........................things Carnival does right!!

It's in the paperwork.....Carnival reserves the right to cancel your reservation due to a charter. Something to that effect. Anyway, if a big group booked, I don't think I would want to be on that ship. Others who have sailed with large groups say those groups think "they own the ship." No thank you.

Yes tons of people got bumped from sailing out of Baltimore. They way overbooked and took those who lived closest or those that booked airfare with Carnvial first (for the bump). You don't have to agree to the bump, but you could do quite well if you are flexible in your plans.

Friends of ours were booked on a cruise over Christmas and the sailing got so overbooked, they were offered any other cruise and instant upgrade to a suite. They were not able to take it since one was a teacher and couldn't take any other time off.

I understand overbookings, but come on, a lot of people plan for a long time for a cruise - and it would just stink if a bump caused problems.

This just happened to me on my last cruise in January...it was no big deal!

I was first bumped from the Ecstasy to the Elation (I do feel really bad for the people on the Sensation, Holiday and Elation that were bumped completely) and then I was bumped off my specific week for a charter group. I was given a more than adequate discount from Carnival for when I rebooked my cruise (without even having to beg or plead for it...they politely offered it to me) - and I just decided to go a week earlier. Actually, in my opinion, I think it worked out better that I got bumped the 2nd time.

It has happend to us twice on one of the upscale lines. It was really disappointing, but they refunded all air that we had paid ourselves, refunded all cruise fees and gave us a large % off our next cruise with them both times. It happens on a regular basis on the upscale lines with small ships.

I was asked to give up my cabin for a 14 day cruise on HAL in January. They offered me the same cruise a month later and 25% off but I had made too many plans so I turned them down. No problem.

My Mississippi cruise this year had to be rescheduled because the American Queen was pulled out of service for charter in the Gulf Coast area.

Delta Queen gave me an onboard credit for the Mississippi Queen cruise I rescheduled for. As well, the honored the "early booking bonus" of free airfair and a % off the price. Rescheduling came after the bonus offer had expired - they honored it based on the original date I had booked.

I understand why they had to pull a boat out of service and am happy with what they offered me in return.

Was bumped for Katrina victims. Didn't mind though. Carnival treated us right. We have another one booked, we came out about $600 better if you include the onboard credit Carnival gave us for the bump

So true. I was on a cruise where about 3/4 of the passengers were insurance agents on a group "incentive" cruise. I think I would have rather been bumped. I couldn't get signed up for any spa services because all had already been reserved in advance for the insurance agents and/or spouses. Same thing for shore excursions. The library was closed as it was being used as a meeting room, so no books or games were available. Ditto for a couple of the bars. Every show started with at least 15 minutes of some insurance executive making announcements and "inside jokes". The dining rooms were noisy and raucous. Granted, I'll admit that ANY cruise is better than NO cruise, but this wasn't my most enjoyable one by any means.

I believe this would have me writing complaints up the chain of comand, esp. the executives taking over a public show:eek: . If they want a private charter they should pay for the use of the whole ship. If they are not willing to do that - confine your announcments to private meetings.

Glad you made the best of the trip and didn't let it ruin your vacation.

  • 1 month later...

Occasionally, crew gets bumped. If capacity would be over Coast Guard regulations, some crew either get sent to another ship for a week or put up in a hotel. Cheaper for Carnival to do that than lose the revenue (shore excursions, photos, casino, bar) of a paying customer.

Never happened to us, we always book air with Carnival. I thought that I read in the article that you do not have to accept the bump.

For us we plan over a year in advance for each of our cruises and we have no option to re-book the trip, so we would not accept the bump.

We have been on board where a large group was also on the ship, but heck with 3300 people on board what differnce does it make.
