What to do in Anchorage?

We just got our flight info from RCI and are pretty happy with it, and we now have time to sightsee in Anchorage. Any suggestions on what to do there for about 8 hours? Also need somewhere to dump luggage if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

On a rainy day - actually on any day - you can't beat the Anchorage Museum of History and Art (or vice versa). If you have a car, the Native Hospital on Tudor Road has excellent and well-priced native products - jewelry, baskets, ivory, etc. Also, if you have a car, the Hatcher Pass area is beautiful. Lots to do in Anchorage. Nancy

Good choice, Sandy. May I suggest a stop in at Portage Glacier Visitor Center and lunch in Girdwood at the Bake Shop (behind the Jade Shop). We try to go down there at least once every time we're in Anchorage. The soups are great - and refillable. The begonias should still be in flower then. If it's a really clear day, you might want to take the tram at the Alyeska Hotel down the road. Nancy

We will have a car for the day and are interested in Hatcher Pass. What do you recommend in the area?

I'd like a virtual drive that goes all the way to Anchorage with all the points of interest noted, similar to Murray's guide for Skagway. Does anyone have anything like this. I plan on visiting Portage Glacier, the Animal Conservation Center, Earthquake Park, and a few other places if time. Please give advice on what I can possibly fit into 8-9 hours traveling Whittier to Anchorage.

Susan, Welcome back, how was your cruise? Hope you had a fabulous time.

The cruise was great and thanks for asking. Highly recommend the 10 day Panama Canal cruise. We were the last one of the season for Panama & Costa Rica as most of the ships will head up here for the summer.

Of course, another cruise was booked while we were on this one. The 14 day round trip for Hawaii on the Radiance of the Seas opened while we were on this one. Fortunately, had made all the arrangements with a travel agent before we left to ensure our cabin pick for that sailing :D

Susanh, glad to hear you had a good time. We looked into the Radiance last year for Alaska but ended up booking Princess. Have always wondered if we missed anything by doing so. Looking forward to your thoughts on that ship.
