Tell me all about the Galaxy

WE never discovered the champagne bar on our alaska cruise, but looking at the deck plan, there IS a champagne bar. Its all by itself, on the plaza deck aft. It looks like its in a little area between the galley and dining room. From the lobby you would have to go up a deck, go to the aft, then back down a deck to get to it.

Sailed on Galaxy 6/21/2004 cruise. Have three comments about her, I will let the others address the food, service and other issues. On our cruise, we (most of the passengers) fouind the Air Conditioning in all public rooms to be excessively cold. Temperature setting, I would guess was at 68 to 70 degrees, great for the crew with jackets, but cold for those of us in informal dress. There was a run on shawls sold in one of the shops. During formal nights, most ladies were wearing the shawls to keep their shoulders warm.

The cabins were a little better. The warmest setting, 80 on the Thermostat would make it comfortable to sleep with a blanket. I commented to out steward that the AC was to "high". He misunderstood, and set the thermostat to 70. It took 24 hours to make it warmer. I actually used the hair dryer to heat the cabin a bit. Our dinner table mates, had similar cabin temperature problems.

All windows in the public areas were cloudy with salt and dirt, one could not enjoy to view the sea or passing ships. This was most apparent in the Level 12 disco, whose daytime duty was as a viewing retreat. The solved the problem by lowering the drapes on windows in the lounges. I was on a HAL and Costa cruise last year and they both had clean glass. When in port, there was a crew tendind to the ship, painting and cleaning glass.

The iteniery was changed twice, without any notification. I understand the Turkish ports were substituted for one day at sea and onother for Dubrownik because of a bomb going off in January (On that basis no one should go to New York) No big loss there because the time in port made it impossible to tour anything.

However, dropping Taormina in favor of Messina, which was some 28 miles away, really irked me. In my opinion, this port is better than others offered on this cruise and the highlight of the trip. The only explanation received was that not enough tenders in Giardini, the town below Taornmina, were available, and it would take excessive time to get people ashore. Hello, what about the life boats? My last Costa cruise used 4 life boats as tenders with no problem. Could it be that they were now able to charge $35 per person for a bus ride to Taormina?

Still wondering if it has a champagne bar...:)

There are two bars immediately forward of the restaurant, the Martini bar, and the Champagne bar. As I've said, we're not big barflies, so I don't think I've ever had a drink in either.

No clue about ESPN, I don't watch sports, sorry.

I'm fairly sure CIgars in Michael's have gone the way of all flesh.

deharry - bummer, sorry to hear it, I've never seen salt on the observation lounge windows, & the room windows normally get cleaned every port day with a nifty automated system. I've had much more trouble with too hot than too cold, but that's me & I wasn't on your cruise. I can't speak to the itinerary at all, since I wasn't there and have never done that itinerary - lines have been very nervous about ports in the Eastern med. I rather doubt any of it was a conspiracy to bilk you for $35 - you may simply enjoy other cruise lines better.

Good cruising to all!

We will be on the Galaxy on 22 Jan 05. I have a question about the Penthouse deck. We've booked a Family cabin #1152 across the back of the ship. I was wondering if there is some kind of deck across the back? In the deck plans is shows two sets of stairs on either side and was wondering if that was an open deck back there? Thanks for the help.

Thank you so much for the information excitedofharpenden. I'm sure we will use it a lot during our cruise. We may just go up on deck and bring some chairs down for our use there. There will be 6 of us on that sailing, mom & dad celebrating 60 yrs of marriage, sister and husband and myself and daughter. Can't wait! Thanks again.

Can I ask about the point made by deharry re temperature aboard. We're off in a couple of weeks and I when I check the webcam showing the computer suite, I do notice that people are often dressed in long sleeved shirts or long trousers - they don't look dressed for warm mediterranean weather. Have any other recent cruisers found things a bit cool please?

Galaxy, or so I noticed on our cruise in March, does tend to be a bit cooler on the inside...seems like they really pump the A/C.

BUT -- if you're following dress code for the evening, this makes wearing those long sleeves and dressy suits a *LOT* more enjoyable than it would be in 80 degree temperatures :-)

Hi folks,

We're booked on the Galaxy for a 14 night B2B repo in October, and are really getting psyched-thanks for all the great comments.

Cujosmom, we will be in 1242, and will post a review when we are back. I have a friend who has been on the Galaxy who assured me we would love that area.

Thanks garykool - I realised the benefit for men in suits in the evenings but as I said, it did strike me as to why people are dressed like that during the day. It's our first cruise so not sure what to expect yet! Everyone seems to think its great so hopefully it will be!

I cant wait to sail the Galaxy in 11 months!!

Here are some questions:

1) What is the Oasis pool like? Do they tend to keep the roof open or closed..or is it just weather dependent?

It's a small quiet pool in the back of the ship. It was weather dependent at one time but I think the roof is often closed.

3) Is the restaurant layout similar to that on the Century?

When Celebrity built the Galaxy they designed her to be different than the Century. The layout is similar, but the space is quite different. It is stern located with the big picture windows but inside the feel is completely Galaxy's. The Century still has Celebrity's most elegant restaurant but the Galaxy's has her own elegance with totally different furnishings than the Century.

4) What are some of the major difference between this ship and the Cenury besides that it is 7,000 tons larger?

The Galaxy has a 4 deck foyer designed by a different designer. All public areas differ greatly from the Century including Michael's Club, foyer, Rendezvous lounge, dining room, buffet, casino. The aft nightclub is somewhat similar to the Century. The Galaxy has a 2 deck aft foyer in front of her restaurant. Unlike most sister ships, the Century class ships don't just copy each other, they all have unique spaces unto themselves which I think makes them a standout in the industry.

5) Is the feeling of a European cruise different onboard as opposed to when Galaxy is in the Carib?

I think so.

6) Will the entertainment be better onboard Galaxy than that on the Century (well at least how it was a year ago.. the magician...well he was no magician. One could figure out each trick he was doing!)

Can't be predicted. It's variable. Entertainers change every few months.

Just off the galaxy 13 days ago. We had no trouble with the A/C in our room or on the ship. When our room was too cold we turned it up a couple degrees and within 5 minutes we were fine.

We were always comfortable on the ship with the exception of the buffet area. At lunch we would feel a bit cold but it could have had something to do with the fact that we had been out in the heat (and it was warm) then entered the A/C.

Our windows were just fine. We saw the window cleaners a couple of times when we were leaving the ship to go on a great adventure.

Fortunately for us there were no ports changes. If there had been we would have been disappointed but we know that the ship doesn't upset their passengers just for the heck of it. It is for our safety or welfare in one way or another.

So, maybe some of the things that annoyed deharry have been put right. It was a super cruise. The Galaxy was wonderful. I am jealous of all of your who are sailing her soon.

fireguy091,

We have a Celebrity Galaxy personal planning page, which has many links to Galaxy photo albums (1000’s of cruise ship pictures including food photos), personal cruise websites, stateroom locations (deck layouts), cruise cam (bridge cam), Galaxy Dailys, Menus (dinner, lunch, cabin breakfast, casual dining), wine list, bar menus, the CDC Sanitation Inspection Scores, many review posts, and more. We will continue to add new information to the page:

I just went on the 10 day Western Mediterranean tour sailing July 23. The Savoy Nightclub is generally used for karaoke and the games involving passengers--ie, the Newlywed and Not-so-Newlywed competition. Most nights it was crowded with families, groups, couples, etc. The Stratosphere Lounge on Deck 12 was more for singles mingling, esp. the younger crowd, and was the big dance area with the DJ. There were actually a lot of older folks that brought down the house with the classic dance moves--always quality entertainment. There were always a few couples dancing in Rendezvous Square before and after dinner, but that was a lounge singer singly mostly oldies. Don't worry when no one is out on boarding night, everyone needs to sleep b/c you'll find a way to stay out partying the rest of the nights. Definitely no ESPN--the Stratosphere TVs broadcast CNN 24/7. Have fun! I stayed up most nights til breakfast at 6:30-7 am so I could watch the sunrise (beware: in the Mediterranean, the sun only sort of sets into and rises from a blue haze after the sky has already changed). Oh and the retractable pool roof was open for most of the duration of our cruise, during hotter midday hours.
