We took T/C in Euros and had a difficult time cashing them. I'm surprised that your tour guide said you could pay in T/C's because he would have a hard time cashing them. The reason- he's the third party and therfore the cashing agency can't verify the signatures. Depending on which ship you're on, they would cash them onboard but this doesn't help since you would still be walking around with the cash all day.

On our last cruise we took T/C but in dollars which we cashed on the ship and then again in London at an Am/Ex office. By doing that we minimized any charges associated with cashing the checks.

We were planning on doing something similar this year except we were considering getting some of the checks in euros for our stay in Rome before the cruise.

Have a great next cruise.

Thats interesting most , actually all except one ( he wants paid in US dollars ) have told me they would take TC or cash in euros.

Besides can't you cash in a TC on your ship?

We recently ran into a similar problem when a hotel we had booked in Praiano (the Amalfi Coast) requested we pay them in cash or travelers checks. If we had used US dollar TCs, we would have been clobbered on the rate of exchange. If we purchased Euro TCs in the states, we would have been clobbered by the typically awful US based rate of exchange plus fees. So what to do? In the end we decided to use our ATM card to get the money (almost always the best rates). Since we needed about 1100 Euros, we took out the money over several days (there are usually daily limits on ATMs ranging from 200 to 400 Euros). We had no problems and got the really good commercial exchange rates offered through ATMs (our bank does not assess any additional charges).
