Statendam - Room Safes?

Yes, Chief, all cabins on all HAL ships have a safe in them. The method to lock the safe may vary from ship to ship, however.

Some have used a card-key system, others a key. I have used safes the need a card with a magnetic strip (doesn't have to be a credit card; a library or AAA card works), and others use a 4-digit code you choose yourself.

The method may have changed on some ships as the technology has improved and the ship has been updated.

There is also a locking drawer in each of the nightstands.

We had the locking drawers on Prinsendam and they used a very good grade of tumbler lock that would be fairly difficult to pick. On the Rotterdam, the locks were a very cheap cabinet lock, but it didn't make any difference... there were no keys for them.

The safe on Rotterdam locked with a key. It's a real pain trying to remember to take the key with you. I much prefer the four number or mag strip safes.

I never felt the need to take the safe key with me. I simply hide it away in a safe place.

I figure that if anyone were to get in my cabin, and if they were to start looking to take things, they would assume I had taken the key and not look for it.

Besides, what are the odds someone is going to get in and have time to find and use that key?

If they're that lucky they'll be in the casino!

Whether you take it with you or hide it, you still need to remove it from the safe. after being used to safes that lock with the touch of a button, we just didn't get in the habit og checking to see if the key was removed every time we went out. It stayed in the door of the safe many times while we were out, even at times when we were out for the day. Nothing was ever missing, but we sure left ourselves vulnerable.

On the Statendam the small safe in the closet works with a 4-number code that you choose and set yourself. It works very well, but the safe itself is quite small. Try taking a few medium-sized envelopes to organize what you will put in the safe ( cash, credit cards, passports, cruise documents, air tickets, etc ): that way you can easily grab what you need, rather than taking everything out and sorting through the lot.

We had a wonderful month last year on the Statendam. Probably the best crew to date for us. Very happy, pleasant servers and great stewards.

Grumpy1,

I agree! I did not like the safes on the Rotterdam and didn't use the one in my cabin. I much prefer the ones for which you can set your own combination. I though about leaving some things in a security box with the Purser, but HAL policy says they would not be liable if something was missing from there either - go figure!

I have always felt reasonably safe using the room safe, but I did not want to take the chance on this cruise.

Ciao!

Just wondering what you did do with your valuables then if you didn't use the room safe or the Purser's securoty box? We don't like the key safes either, but using something is better than nothing. ;)

We just returned from the Statendam and our room had a safe with a plastic card with holes punhed in to open the safe. I kept it in my wallet with my room card. I wouldn't want to invite the room steward to have acces to it leaving it in the room.

Statendam safe - hate the ones in the suites!!! DH had to work it for me. For suite passengers it is located under the TV's new DVD. It is smaller than on other ships. It is also set way into the cabinet. You have "key" card which you use. And there is handle to turn after opening and closing the safe. DH always had to get down onto the floor to get in and out of the safe. I did not hide the key card - kept it with me.

I'm sorry, but you walked right into this one and I can't resist. I just keep having this image of your DH getting in and out of the safe. Wow! That must have been difficult as small as the safes are!!!! :)

I warned you, I couldn't resist!
