Average age of HAL passengers

We would much rather watch a movie or listen to some jazz or blues (I'm really looking forward to the Piano Bar)

I was very diasppointed to find the piano bar on the Westerdam near the Casino. They smoke  in the casino and the wizzing-werring sounds mingle with the smoke. Same goes for the sports bar.

The lounge by the lower dining room ( deck 2) had wonderful harp music, rotated with a violin with piano.

Is the Westerdam like the Noordam? If so, then maybe we'll be paying a visit to the lounge ;)

Yes the two ships have the same configuration. I just looked up the name of the lounge that I liked and it was the Explorer's lounge.

I hope that even with all your preparation for the cruise that it is BETTER than you ever imagined!

From a news report concerning all cruiselines:

About 51 million Americans, or 17 per cent of the population, have taken a cruise. The average cruise passenger is 49 years old and has an annual household income of US$104,000, the trade group said. — Bloomberg

For every person you see that's younger than 49, someone else is that much older.

If your household doesn't make $104,000... then the pax next to you is taking home your share:eek:

I hope no one took my question the wrong way! We're not prejudice against any age, we just didn't want to feel out of place. We took 2 cruises previously on Carnival and really enjoyed them, they don't call them the "fun ships" for nothing. I guess any cruise is what you make it, if you want to have fun, you will! We are not a wealthy couple and are trying to justify spending an extra $3000 on HAL over the same amount of days on Carnival. Thanks to all who voiced their opinoins!:)

If I was in my 30's I would not Cruise on HAL, now that I am in my 60's - I would

not cruise with any other line....

Stick with Carnival! Why would HAL be 3 grand more - something does not sound right??!!

I'll bet you a nickel that if you go on a HAL cruise expecting to have a good time, that you will. I'm not certain that age is that much of a factor, really.

As has been stated on this thread, you're going to find that your fellow pax are very well educated, and extremely well travelled.

I think that you'll find that the staff will work very hard to make it a positive experience for you thoughout your cruise.

My wife is disabled and operates a mobility scooter on the ship. On Carnival the wheelchair accessible rooms are inside staterooms and as such are at the bottom of the fee scale. On HAL (as I understand) the accessible rooms are outside staterooms = higher price. The Canada/New England cruise I was looking at was priced through Carnival at $900pp (Canadian) and through HAL (although 2 days longer and better itinerary) at $2200pp (Canadian). Quite a difference for 2 extra days!

Responding to the OP: yes, you will be among the youngest on the boat. Spouse & I (early 40s) were easily in the youngest 10% on our last HAL voyage. This was fine by us, as we do not seek shipboard company and prefer to bake in the sun or...exercise...on our balcony. If you are looking for camaraderie in your age group, you are looking in the wrong place; you will be two of maybe 20-30 people (out of 1200) in your 30s.

It all depends on what you want.

HAL= older, after 11 pm the ship is dead. Zuiderdam Oct. 2004.

Yeah, but was this a seven-day port intensive itinerary? If so, hey ... I'm 50 ... and I'm turning in by 11:00 p.m. so that I can be up early to enjoy the next day's port. I really don't think it's an entirely age-related matter. It's more related to the itinerary being sailed.

I seem to find that the ships most likely to empty out the public areas early are the ones sailing port-intensive itineraries. After all, you book those cruises to see the ports ... not necessarily be out all night aboard the ship. But when you have an itinerary with a lot of sea days ... like my Hawaii/South Pacific cruise this past January ... a cruise which, by the way, because of its length had an average passenger age of late 70s ... you'll find people up and about much later. If the next day is another sea day, generally there is no need to be up early, and hence people will tend to stay up later in the evening.

Just something I've observed.

Blue skies ...

Agreed.

It also depends upon the itinerary length, region of the world being sailed, and the dates of the sailing. When school is out, when the cruise is just 7-days, and when the region being cruised is one of the popular "mass-market" venues, what you describe is not the case. However ... on longer cruises (10+ days), cruises in certain areas of the world (like Europe), and cruises that occur while kiddies are being indoctrinated ... yes, a very large percentage of the ship will be retirement age and up. I've been on quite a few cruises where I was among the youngest people aboard. I have also been on cruises where there were lots of people my age (for whatever THAT is worth).

I personally like the idea of being one of the younger passengers on the ship (I'm 33 next Monday). That means there are less 20-something hard bodies to distract my husband's attention.:)

Happy Birthday Maam!

A mans eyes wil always look ..thats what the reson for eyes are..to see. or Sea to see...

Woman to men are magnificent creations. Works of art.

Trust is something gained then given.

 Having completed three HAL Cruises this year, I can state theat the Average age seems to depend on the length of the cruise. The longer the cruise is the older the Cruisers. Take a 1 week cruise in the summer, when school's out, and you'll see lots of famlies w/ kids. Take a 30 day cruise in the fall and you'll see lots of people in their 70's and even 80's.

We are 59, and we were among the youngest on 2 HAL cruises, however we liked it, because the older generation have more class, are less rude, and have good manners. :) Thats Important.
