I'm a first time cruiser and am wondering what the policy is about bringing a few bottles of wine onboard to enjoy in our room. I've read elsewhere that HAL charges 3-4x retail for wine. Are the wine and beer prices outrageous?

We are from the USA and departing Vancouver, which may complicate things.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. You can bring wine and champagne on board with no problem. If you want to take it to the DR to have with dinner, there is a $15 corkage fee which includes the tip for the wine steward. I don`t know what the regs are re bringing wine into Canada, someone else may be able to answer that for you........jean:cool:

You are permitted to bring as much wine on board as you wish for incabin consumption in US ports.

But I am not certain how much you will be allowed to take into Canada as you will be coming from the US. The form that we had to turn into the Canadian immigration when we crossed from the US into Canada was "one bottle of alcohol per person" which to my understanding includes wine.

Here are the facts:

Restrictions on items for Personal Use

Alcohol - Those meeting the age requirements of the province or territory of entry (19 in most provinces and territories; 18 in Alberta, Manitoba, and Québec) may bring into the country either:

  1. 1 litres (40 ounces) of liquor or wine; or
  2. 24 containers, at 355 millilitres (12 ounces) each, or their equivalent, of beer or ale.

Any alcohol in excess of these amounts will be subject to duty, provincial fees and taxes, except where it is illegal to bring in more alcohol than specified above.

But if you can find a wine store in Vancouver before boarding, bring a board as much as you can carry. No beer or hard liquer though.

If anyone is interested in buying wine in Vancouver, there is a liquor store approx 3 blocks from the pier. It is in Harbour Centre mall on Seymour and Cordova (on the way to Gastown). It will have every kind of wine that you are looking for.

Can anyone give pointers as to the best method to travel with your own bottles of wine? We will be on the Zaandam in 2/07 on a 15 day Hawaiian cruise so it makes sense to bring a full case with us.But can you bring it that way or must you pack securely in a standard suitcase? The good news for us is that we are departing from a local port so no plane trip involved.

Anybody have any tips?

Thanks,

SherriM and DH

You can carry it on board with you. Just leave it in the case. no need to repack.

DH's taste buds are somewhat lacking, so he finds the wine in a box perfectly drinkable. Its also very transportable and non-breakable. We carried a box on our last Caribbean cruise and it lasted him a week.

Excellent idea...and we may need to start taste testing NOW to see which we like best! ;)

Thank you!

Here is a link that will take you to an information page for the Harbor Centre Liquor Store. http://www.bcliquorstores.com/en/storelocations?region=Lower+Mainland&location=Vancouver+-+Downtown

There is a phone number, address and hours of operation. If you have a specific wine that you want you may want to talk to them and ensure that they have it in stock or can order it for you. They may be able to take a credit card payment and deliver it to your pre-cruise hotel or right to the ship. Good luck.
