My Family & I Are Going On The Destiny Cruise On 07/16/06.

We Would Like To Go To Harrison's Caves While In Barbados.

We Don't Want To Sign Up For A Tour (just Go On Our Own). Does

Anyone Know How Far From The Ship Terminal It Is And What Would Be The Cheapest Way To Get There. We Have 6 People In Our Group. Is It Worth It To Rent A Car For The Day. Any Suggestions?

Unfortunately...last I heard the caves were shut down for rennovations on July 9th....and will remain closed thru the Spring of 2007. The caves are what I was really looking forward to.....and I'm at a loss on what to do now. Good luck with your planning....and please let me know what you did instead. Enjoy your cruise!!!

I just checked their website and there is nothing on it about being closed down. Can I ask where you got this information as I had wanted to see it in November.

There were some news articles on this. It is closed until April 2007.

In July 2006 the cave was closed for redevelopment work. The project will take 15 months and will cost USD 34 million.

 

The works will include the installation of state-of-the-art trams, including one for wheelchair-bound visitors. Vendors' kiosks, an amphitheatre, and a car park with 114 parking spaces will be built.

 

But the main idea is an ecologic improvement, with the installation of a water treatment plant and the usage of rain and grey water for irrigation. Solar power will be used to provide 30% of the cave's energy demand.

 

Please return when it is finished. It will be a great improvement.

This was also something that I was leaning toward doing while in Barbados and am now disappointed. Not good news to us who are going to miss out on the cave experience and looking towards something different. I figure one could shop anywhere. Oh well, just have to now start looking at something else to do on December 5, 2006 while on the island.

 

Glad to hear it'll be a great improvement but chances of being back are slim! It will likely be a long time down the road before I get another chance at Barbados.

Friends tell me the same thing about Barbados. They have no idea how we had such a horrible time. Anyhow we will try it again. I was hoping for the caves, but they are closed until April. :) :) :)

I'm still at a loss other than just an island tour thru the ship.

I've read Glory Tours are excellent, but I'm leary of having to pay 1/2 up front...and they are a little pricey.

While Harrison's Cave is a really great thing to see while visiting Barbados, it's not the be all end of what we have to offer.

 

I highly recommend an island tour, with the ship or not.. your choice. there are many other things to see and do.

 

St. Johns Parish Church, Andromeda Gardens, Flower Forest, Orchid World. Sunbury Plantation, Ocean Park, Bathsheba and Cattlewash, The Wildlife Reserve, Gun Hill Signal Station, The Barbados Synagogue, Bridgetown, Speightstown, Animal Flower Cave and the cliffs in the north. and much much more.

AMEN! We just spent 8 glorious days in Barbados and ran out of days to sightsee. Harrison Caves is just one excursion. There is the Barbados reserve where you can see monkeys ~ we took a tour of the island with the yellow truck folks (10 people) and saw eight parishes. The landscape is fantastic and so diverse. So many things to do. There is a marine reserve in Folkstone (west coast) full facililies, snorkel rental etc. no entrance fee and snorkeling right of the beach ~ amazing fish and coral!

 

We did two catamaran tours ~ they all looked great ~ we swam with turtles, snorkeled at two places and went to Paradise beach (beautiful beach). Our trip was 5 hours including a delicious lunch chicken and flying fish (I ate flying fish every day so-o- delicious) beer, sodas, punch and rum punch. We paid $60 per person.

 

We are planning to go back to Barbados next year for a week. The friendliest people we have ever met.

I see that you went to folkstone...how much was the taxi? also, was there enough to do there to keep you busy all day?
