Shipboard credit question

We have $200 in credit for booking our cruise through Travelocity. It distinctly says it is not good in the casino or for tips. I asked the booking person at Travelocity if we could use it on shore excursions and she said no. I don't see anything saying we can't so I wonder if she is wrong. I have a feeling you experienced guys know more than she does. How about it? Thanks, Alan.

I believe that if the $200 credit is assigned to your sign and sail account you can use it any way you want..........but not in the casino as that is a cash based venue. Someone may correct me on that, but that is what I believe.

Maybe she thought you meant in the port while on a shore excursion.

They post the credit to your shipboard account the first day so you start out with a credit balance. All charges then go on the account. We always have some type of shipboard credit and have never had it not applied in this manner. In other words yes your cost for the Princess shore excursions and tips are then charged so the credit is used against them. Casino's are cash only but you can also charge some cash on your shipboard account but they charge you a fee which makes that an unadvisable thing to do.

You can use your credit against the price of an excursion, things purchased on board, tipping "because Princess charges your account", booze, etc. This is what I was told by the travel agent when my account was credited. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!

It's kind of a moot point anyway, since it is so easy to run up a tab of much more than $200, even with just one shore excursion. In a practical sense, it just doesn't matter, unless you are one of those rare people who can cruise without spending any money while on board. To put it another way: $200 doesn't go very far if you are having fun.:)

I don't know if this is true anymore but years ago we took our first cruise with NCL. (before we got smart and starting sailing with Princess) We had credit on that cruise and could only use it for photographs and drinks. So maybe on some cruiselines it is still like that. You can use it on Princess to just pay off part of the final bill. That includes tips, tours, pictures, drinks, etc.

I have a question ....

We have $350 shipboard credit for our Caribbean Princess cruise in 3 wks. I would like to use part of it, to buy a future cruise credit (open booking). Can I use my shipboard credit for that or do I need to put it on credit card instead? I know they usually ask for credit card. Had asked my TA, she said to try, but she didn't think I could do it. She did know of a TA that got away with doing it though.

Has anyone tried this?

I've always had to put future cruises on separate CC charge. On-board credits can only be used for purchases on board as a general rule. I'm sure there are some here who have managed to do otherwise on a limited basis.

I agree with spongerob. Just this last Feb we applied for a future booking and yes they do use a separate credit credit purchase. Cannot apply to shipboard credit. I also agree that on Princess anyway shipboard credit can be used for most everything on the ship including shore excursions, tipping etc.

Eyern: Your post asked about a $200 booking credit not a shipboard credit. They are actually two different things. We will have a shipboard credit from booking on another cruise. By purchasing this cruise with Travelocity we are also receiving a credit ..But: It's in the form of a prepaid Mastercard that will be mailed 4 to 6 weeks after the cruise. I think the promotion you have booked with is probably a combination of shipboard credit and "cash" after the cruise credit. That was the way I understood the revised promotion they toted in an email recently. Check with Travelocity again and make the distinction between shipboard credit and booking credit. Enjoy your cruise ..everyone is right the $ melt away but the vacation is worth it! :)

Jenice: Let me clarify. When we booked, we received "$200 in your onboard account at the time of sailing" (travelocity's wording) which I interpret to be shipboard credit, certainly not credit toward booking a future cruise. Alan.

Hi. We just returned from the C.P., where we had a shipboard credit. We used it in the casino, shore excursion, tips, pictures, and drinks. But, I agree with the above that it is a moot point, as everything is so expensive, a $200. credit won't take long to vanish.. Bombero

booked 11/27 Carb. with Travelocity. they offered 150 on board credit and 150 after you sailed if you used a master card for all of you cruise price. the 150 comes 4 - 6 weeks after in the form of a m/c credit card. Also for booking a future cruise we receive 50 per person on board credit. Also received 50 off the cruise for referring someone who also booked. As of yet princess and travelocity have not shown it on the web site, but documentaion and verbally said yes this is right.
