What is the worst behaivor you have seen by a passenger on an NCL ship

Earlier this year on the Jewel we were on the bow in a penthouse suite. Each evening before dinner, we would meet our friends (in the cabin next door) on the balcony and have pre-dinner cocktails, as most of our neighboring cabins did as well.

One night as we were leaving port, quite a few of us where out on the balconies chatting. There was another ship leaving port ans coming across the bow. The "gentleman" from the cabin above was telling us we should all moon the ship. We laughed a bit but then looked up and there he was....pants dropped and shaking his butt.

Later that evening we saw him walking to dinner, in a suit, wearing a rasta hat with fake dreadlocks hangin out. He was full of class, I tell ya.

It took me a long time to think of something, but was reminded of this today through another post.

During our SS Norway cruise in 2001, dinner one evening was open-seating as we were in port. (SS Norway did not use Freestyle Dining.) We had just been seated - "we" consisting of me, my husband, and our then-7-year-old son, who was quietly sitting at the table reading the kids menu. There were empty seats at our table, and a couple was escorted to them. The woman said in a loud voice, while pointing at my son, "This won't do. I don't want to sit with him."

I understand that some passengers prefer to not sit with children, but pointing at a child like that and making him feel as if he did something wrong is just plain mean.

Oh, I have one, but not nearly as rude as my bil experienced.

Mine: When we were on the Elation, we had a great time but I wished we HAD been rude and asked to be relocated because our assigned tablemates were ignorant, complained about everything. We had the late sitting and one night the others left early(thank goodness) and we just sat around too stuffed to move. We talked to our waitor quite a bit asking him about his family, etc... and made sure he knew we didn't care for our tablemates. We(dh,bil, sil, and I) had great service and we thought they were just crusty folks.

My other bil: He was living in New Orleans and fled to Houston area during Hurricane Katrina. His home was one that was wiped out, he lost everything. So, he headed out here to CA and my mil booked a last minute deal so he could avoid the news(right after the levies broke). So they took off and while he was standing in line this lady kept coming up behind them cutting in front of people all the way. She got up and barked at him that he should let her ahead of them in a nasty mean way because she had family in that area and she was at her wits end. He turned around and told her that he just lost everything, his car, his belongings, etc... He was on this cruise to "get away" from it all. I guess she was very apologetic after that and it turned out her cabin was just a few down from hers so she kept apologizing over and over. And when he participated in the talent contest she was is biggest applauder and screamed for him. LOL

I like to people watch, and the only thing that ever really "bugs" is when people have poor manners and are rude. Please and thank you, I'm sorry, excuse me, can just about right any wrong. I can't remember the exact wording, something like, One who is offended is a fool, one who is offended when it is meant to offend, is a bigger fool.

The next thing was as we were leaving during early disembarkment. My DH is in a wheelchair and as we are trying to get past security and onto the ramp no one is letting him through. No one is helping him and I couldn't because I got pushed through the crowd. Finally a very nice passenger took her suitcases and blocked everyone from passing and in no uncertain terms told everyone to wait so my DH could get by. My DH thanked her and if she is reading this I thank her too.

OMGosh, that just reminded me! I was in a class today and the teacher(she's old enough to be my mom) recently broke her foot. She went to the fair yesterday with her kids and grandaughter pushing her in a borrowed wheelchair. She said she felt "invisible" and she couldn't seen much but "butts" and couldn't see the tops of the display tables. She ended up getting parked between two strollers and she leaned over to one of the toddlers and said, "Hi, how's it going? Nice weather. Interesting view." And the moms/dads immediately noticed this stranger speaking to her and moved the strollers out of her way. So, just make sure your dh talks to strangers and they'll move. LOL

We took a shore excursion lin Panama last year and were told that the caravan of vans would be together and we would all stop at the same places, so when they told us they would not board the next van until the first was full we split up our party of 12 (3 families). Our oldest children 17, 15 & 14 jumped on the first van to fill in the empty seats and the rest got on the next. Well on our van an older woman refused to sit next to her husband and proceeded to put something on the seat next to his and she sat across the aisle and filled the seat next to her with a bag. We were shaking our heads thinking - we just broke up our party to fill seats and they let her get away with this!!! The caravan left the port area and the van in front of us with our kids went left, we went right!!! We were still assured we would be together at the first stop. Three stops later we did catch up with them and us Moms were very freaked out by then, we wanted our children WITH us, since there was no guarantee this wouldn't happen again for the rest of the tour. There were 2 seats not being used and the guide's jump seat but,we had to force this woman to give up the seat next to her husband - finally my DH just removed the bags and sat down. But she would not give the seat next to her. The guide did make some adjustments and got us all in. Some people have alot of nerve.

though not on a cruise i thought i would add my 2p

we were in tunisia a few years ago and almost every night in the bar about 9.30 a man would come in with his baby sit down at a table usually straight across from us then as you please just start changing the baby's nappy(diaper) right there in front of everyone, some nights fine but others PHEWW he would then get up smile and then just dump the offending package in the bin next to the table or worse if no bin was available he just left it on the table now i would not consider my self a prude etc but surly there is a time and a place for this i.e. up in his room or in the toilets

We were on the Wind last spring and were seated next to a couple in the dining room. The man proceeded to take out his cell phone, prop it on the table, and play all his business messages on speaker mode --- LOUD. It was really rude and annoying. I couldn't believe it!

I suppose the rudest thing which we witnessed on the cruise, as well as in restaurants everywhere, is having people use a toothpick or worse yet, floss at the table.

This really is offensive to the point of causing some of us to become quite nauseous.

Very rude or perhaps just plain ignorant, but at any rate not acceptable behavior at a dining table.

Not at the table, please!!

On this years Dream transatlantic in april, I was in the sports bar (buffet) one afternoon.

A couple sitting opposite me carried two of the biggest plates full of food to their table. Not satisfied with this, they kept going back in their turns for more. Now to me it was obvious that they weren't going to eat all this, so I thought I'd hang around to see how much waste there was.

That was a big mistake, even I couldn't believe how little they ate, but still kept going back for more. The table was almost full.

A young Indian girl came to clear the table and asked " is all this waste?" Sure came the reply. She looked in disbelief.

At the end of the trip, I asked the girl for here name for my comment card, convinced she'd done something wrong, she asked why I wanted her name. So I told her.

Now I'm sorry if this is you reading this. But if it had been me clearing the tables, you would have been wearing the left overs.

The amount wasted would have fed a family of 4 in England let alone in India. Probably a family of 4 for a week.

You have to wonder (not for long anyway) what the crew must think of us. Some of us at least.

The rudest behavior I encountered were a couple on an excursion who were upset that the time at the beach was cut short, by 10 - 15 minutes because we could not take the speedboat directly from the dock, as originally planned, we had to be shuttled about 15 minutes away. This was all due to some rough water. No fault of NCL's whatsoever. At the end of the trip when we were supposed to be back on the boat, there were 2 people missing...that's right the couple upset about missing their precious 15 minutes kept the entire boat waiting as they, very slowly, swam back to the boat...they were 15 minutes late, and then bragged about it later...UGH!!!

Come on Monte...it is not limited to NCL ships. Unless of course this is a confession?

PE

OK, but no confession. The wife & I were on the Carnival Fantasy for our first cruise (just a 4 day thing, we didn't know if we would like cruising). It was during spring break and the crowd was somewhat rowdy. On the last night we found the piano bar (I think it was called Cleopatras Lounge) and were having a pretty good time there. After a while, this rather stunning looking lady (probably somewhere around 40 yrs old) came in with a couple of younger men, that my wife & I assumed were probably a couple of her college age sons. They had a few drinks and were enjoying themselves. The two of us decided those were not her sons, when she stood up, started dancing around the table and then proceeded to give both of the guys lap dances! She deserves credit though for being quite a good dancer!

I guess this could also be listed in the other thread for the best behavior on a cruise ship ;)

Okay, I have a couple: On our last cruise on the Majesty, we were on the pool deck enjoying the evening deck party. We were sitting under the "overhang" to the sundeck. #1 -- people stood in front of us!! HELLO??!! We're sitting here trying to watch! #2: Someone (kids, I'm sure) above on the sun deck was pouring coke on the on-lookers below! Yes, more rude than the on-lookers who decided they could just stand in front of us!

On the same cruise, there was a woman who I constantly saw throughout the cruise (it's a small ship) -- in a wheel chair. Every time I came in contact with her -- literally!! -- she'd run me over!! WOW! She could really move in that chair -- arms pushing the wheels and legs walking herself along...

On the Dawn in 04: Our itinerary was switched around due to I can't remember what, so we visited foreign ports before calling on St. Thomas. Well, of course we had to go through C & I: there was a woman in front of us who was just ranting and raving at anyone and everyone about how long it was taking (we probably stood in line 45 minutes tops -- and I guess if we'd have waited, there wouldn't have been a line at all). She then proceeded to chew out the poor crew member who was putting stickers on ship cards once we went through C & I. I felt SO bad for that poor crew member! We ended up on a shore excursion with her to Virgin Gorda...

On the same Dawn cruise -- a woman (European, didn't speak much English, I won't go further than that) was behind me one morning in the buffet line. There were a ton of people ahead of me, and I was in no hurry and simply waited. She kept bumping my tray -- excuse me? Then she said "MOVE!!!" She did it TWICE MORE! I stepped out of the line and let her pass. UGH!

I will say that NONE of these incidents ruined my cruise!!:D

There is great thread on the view of the passengers from the crew side. In an effort not to hijack that thread I thought this would be interesting and offer some insight into what not to do onboard.

I am not sure what the worst behavior I have seen but the following is in the top ten.

I first cruised the Dawn from Miami in Feb 2003, loved the ship and booked July from NYC onboard. I had forgotten the difference between the summer crowd and the off season crowd. I witnessed a lot on that cruise.

The one that sticks in my mind since I ended up in the middle of it was the woman who had a diapered infant in the hot tub  One of the bar staff nicely asked her if she understood babies should not be in the hot tub. I was sitting a chair 2 feet from this woman when she jumped from the tub grabbed the girl by the shirt and started a four letter word beating.

C words F words - I paid for this * vacation. She reduced the girl to tears telling her to go back to the third world hole she climbed out of. Without a doubt the meanest person I have ever seen.

I final got in the middle when the woman demanded the girls pen to write down "her silly * name and report her for ruining the woman's vacation. At this point the girl ran off in tears. I asked the woman if I could use the pen she took. She gave it to me and then asked why as I copied her name from the key card hanging around her neck " so I can report you for ruining my vacation" and I did just that to make sure the abused crew member was not subjected to a false report.

And we wonder why crew members do not always enforce the rules

Shore Guy, you handled this very well. I would have loved to see her face when you told her why you were writing her name.

Great thread, Shoreguy--thanks! I have had a fine time reading all the posts ... my bottom-line response is ICK on all the rude bozos! My lord, I don't get how people can be such boobs (down, Monte!) and so selfish.

I guess I have been seriously lucky on my cruises--only isolated annoying incidences of rudeness. Worth merely a roll of the eyes and another (unneeded) reason to order a margarita or look for a martini class with an opening.

I had 2 instances I will report just so's I can feel a part of things and add my 2 cents ...

1) While sitting at the pool one afternoon, I looked over at the woman sitting on the lounge chair next to me. In disbelief and nausea, I watched her clip her tonails and let 'em fly wherever they wanted. Guess she figured the nail-clippings sweeper would clean up after her disgusting tacky self.

2) When on the Spirit this past February, on 3 different occasions Joe and I saw a forlorn and very bored looking little girl of about 8 or 9 sitting on the floor just outside the casino doors. She always had crayons and coloring book so I guess her parents figured she was good to go for how ever many hours they stayed in the casino gambling. On 2 occasions it was at night and close to 11:00 pm, and I know those times she was left there for at least 2 hours--the other time it was in the afternoon. The poor thing looked so unhappy. Her parents deserve a selfish-parenting award for that one, in my opinion!

Okay, this one wasn't on NCL, but since we're on the topic...

Spring break (should this have been my first clue?) and we were on our first cruise on RCL in the Caribbean. There were glass-walled elevators opposite each other on the ship, and my ten year old loved riding in them. One day we were going up in one, and the elevator on the opposite side was going up, too. My daughter and a 20-something woman in the opposite elevator started taking turns making silly faces at each other through the glass walls. It was cute. Then the woman suddenly turned around, pulled down her shorts and mooned my 10 year old.

That left me with some explaining to do.

While cruising we enjoy getting up early, jumping in a hot tub, and then taking a vigorous walk around the promedade deck. We'll never forget quietly slipping into a hot tub at 6:00 a.m. because a rather obese man was already there, eyes, closed, enjoying his solitude. Then his gas started rising, loudly, odiferously, continuously....and he never even opened his eyes...

We started our brisk walk early that morning, laughing increduously at our surprise sunrise symphony.

I guess he wanted the hot tub to himself - it worked  :D

on the Pride of Aloha. A woman changed her baby's diaper and put it in an ashtray and left.

One evening, while strolling on the promenade deck a young fellow dashed out of a door and threw a chair overboard. Ten seconds later he did it again. We told security - hope they caught him on video.

I must say, the worst part of our POH cruise was the passengers. Although most were nice, there was an abundance of line jumpers, mis-behaving children, and parents in dire need of a parenting class.
