woodsider Posted August 31, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2006 Hi everyone. My wife and I are planning a first time cruise on NOS ex-Southampton UK in 2007. Both F/T w/chair users but fully independant (paras) within obvious limitations. Know that RCI ships are supposed to be excellent and TA is proving helpful. But would like to hear from anyone who has used a HC room on this ship (please say which cabin) and how they found it. Pics would be wonderful. Layout of bathroom and height of beds most important. Any other tips would be welcome. Thanks in advance. :)
CaptData Posted September 1, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 1, 2006 Hi unfortunately my pics were destoryed in a fire. I had an inside room. (H/C) Can you transfer? If so there is a pull down seat in the washroom but no arms. Shower was a roll in type with removeable shower head but may be high for you to reach. I had the Room Steward put it on the shower seat so I did not have to reach for it. The sink is the kind that you can roll your wheelchair under. The bed was wheelchair height (but I don't know about the new bedding). They had pull down bar in the closet but the safe was high up for me (but I am a small person). There was a phone in the washroom within easy reach. Also emergency cords in the the bathroom and head of the bed.

Splinter Posted September 1, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 1, 2006 We have found the beds on RCCL to be significantly lower than other cruise ship beds. If that is a problem for you, they will put an additional mattress on top to raise it. We need this for transfers when we have cruised with them. Just ask your cabin steward. We don't find the pull down seats usable for us in the shower, so we take our own travel rolling shower/commode chair which works very well in the bathroom. My mother's balance is poor, and added to no armrests, and the motion of the ship, I feel this is much safer.
onelegcraig Posted September 4, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 4, 2006 We were recently on Navigator, cabin 7600, balcony. We moved the coffee table to the corner between the loveseat and chair to get it out of the way, but I'm sure the cabin steward would have moved if from the room completely if asked. Also the chair at the desk would not really be needed if you are both in w/chairs, so again, ask the steward to remove it to free up some floor space. I have photos of the room we can send you if you'd like to give me your e-mail address. I feel wierd about posting them on the regular board. We can be reached at k.hemphill@cogeco.ca . Generally the ship is very accessible (even more so than Disney), and we found if you ask for help with a smile, everyone is very accommodating. When you first board the ship, check your dining room assignment to make sure you can have a clear path to your table. If there is a problem, bring it to their attention and they will correct it immediately. The waiters will remove your dining room chairs from the table for the week, so you can 'wheel right on up' and enjoy your meals. The Windjammer may be a problem during busy times, but staff is always available to help with trays and to help you find a table. We would often ask to join a large table that was accessible, and people were always friendly. It is a great way to meet new friends.
enyliram Posted September 10, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 10, 2006 just returned for NOS 09/02-09/09 r/t miami. hc room 63000. incredibly large 100 sq ft more that the cabin category. balcaony 2x as large and accessible via small incline in room and mini ramp to outside. bathroom quite oversized and room for at least 2 people and shower had curtain, seat and grab bars large enough to roll in a wheelchair. beds configured as queen size and linens the finest i have ever seen ,even in the most expensive hotels.elevator access not that close but not so far away .room directly midship.all personnel from cabin stewards to wait staff to all employees always helped with the wheelchair. a ship employee escorted us from the ship thru debarkation from a quiet waiting area all the ways down to the luggage area where porters were waiting.seems a perfect ship for anyone who uses a wheel chair.
