Taxi or train from Marseilles to Aix?

We are 2 couples aged 55 - 83 looking for the best way to get to Aix en Provence from the ship in Marseilles this month - September.

 

Are the trains difficult to access or would a taxi be more reliable?

Will there be plenty of taxis available - it's a Saturday?

What sort of costs are we looking at.

 

Can anyone recommend a taxi or tour company from experience?

 

Is Aix a good place to spend our day from Marseille or would you have better alternatives for a Saturday in Marseilles.

I was just talking to a friend who has been to Aix and he said it is not to be missed. We are using Provence Tours who will have transportation waiting for us when we get off the ship. The cost for a 7hr excursion was $350 euro.

There are excellent train connections (usually at least once per hour) between Marseille and Aix and the train ride is generally about 40 minutes. Round trip fares (2nd class) will cost you about 13 Euros. You can easily get to the train station in Marseille by taking the ships shuttle into town (they will drop you at the Old Port) and walking the few blocks to the station, or you can grab a taxi (more money) from the ship. Aix is a great city for walking with some wide beautiful avenues and lots of cafe/restaurants.

There is also a bus to Aix, just in case the time schedule is better. The bus station is just behind the train station in Marsailles. Saturday is market day in Aix, and you will really enjoy this lovely city.

Does the train take you into the centre of Aix or is there some more walking from the station?

George is 83 and although he OK walking I try to make things easy for him.

 

Also, are the trains pretty reliable - to get back to the ship on time?

 

Looking forward to the market - is it a special one on Saturdays then?

Just got back from Aix last week..... The train station is not that far from the centre (about 10 - 15 mins walk) possibly longer for an elderly person. The trains are very reliable and the market is very interesting and huge. It's found to the north of the Cours Mirabeau- the main street. Our French friends, however, told us that although the market is lovely it isn't cheap and on studying the prices we had to agree. Still, it's always nice to have some souvenirs to bring away with you on holiday.

Can recommend a restaurant at 13 Cours Mirabeau - Bistro Romain. The interior is spectacular and the food excellent - not too dear either!

We will be in Aix on a Sunday in October. Will there be any markets to visit?

The main market is on a Saturday although there are fruit & veg stalls during the week. Sunday is a quieter day but there are lots of souvenir stalls set up along the Cours Mirabeau (the main street through the middle of the town,) on Sunday, specifically for tourists. The town is still worth a visit as most of the larger cafes, restaurants and some of the touristy shops are open - as well as the Churches and art galleries etc.
