lovncruzn Posted September 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2006 Anyone have any trouble with cabbies trying to charge way more to get you back to the ship than they did to take you away from the ship when in ports? I was told by someone that cab fare to a beach was $5, but to get back it was $25 b/c you have no choice but to pay or miss the ship.

HeidiHo Posted September 10, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 10, 2006 I think we ran into that problem in Cozumel but it wasn't that much of a difference. We went to Paradise beach and paid something like $3.00 pp to get there and $4.00 pp to get back. It wasn't worth arguing with them over it. VentureMan_2000 Posted September 10, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2006 Are you talking about while in the Ports...? I haven't experianed that. Usually the rates are set in stone... like $ per person, or $10 pp each way. Not amy actually charge you a metered fare.
cozgal Posted September 10, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 10, 2006 Most taxi drivers are honest, hard working people but there are are always a few, no matter where in the world you are, that give the others a bad name....here are some taxi tips based on my own experiences and from other Cozumel discussion boards 1. Taxi rates are set and are usually posted outside pier terminals and hotels. These rates are for 1-2 people with an additional $1 per extra passenger. 2. Taxi fares are set and established by zones. You can find a copy of the zone map at : http://www.cozumelmycozumel.com/GrapRatesPage1.gif ( the fares noted here are outdated) Sometimes you can save some money by getting out of the cab 1 block away from your destination. Also copy a street map to hep you... http://www.cozumelinsider.com/Streetmap?From=Trans 3. You can find fairly current taxi fares posted at http://www.cozumelinsider.com/Trans (I always carry a copy with me.) 4. Ask the fare and agree before you get in the cab. 5.All taxis are required to carry a fare card (tarjeta). Ask to see it if you feel the price quoted is not right. If the driver refuses to show it to you then get another taxi. 6. Always note the taxi number and the general time/location in case you forget something in the cab or need to file a complaint. 7. The taxi office is located on Calle 2 near Avenida 10 8. Taxi rates are a little higher at night (I think it is after 9PM) 9. It is sometimes a little less to hail a taxi rather than getting a taxi at a sitio,(where the taxis are lined up waiting) as you pay for the time they are lined up ad waiting. 10. Be aware that some businesses/restaurants pay the taxi drivers a commission to direct passengers to them. Be sure of where you want to go. 11. Most taxi drivers are very honest, helpful and hardworking...if you find them helpful a tip is always appreciated. Many of the drivers are happy to share information if you have questions about Cozumel. The fare from the piers to Paradise Beach should be about $12-13... Hope this helps you avoid any taxi trouble in the future.

CozSally Posted September 12, 2006 #9 Share Posted September 12, 2006 Good morning Cozgal, hope all is well on the homefront! The boards you are quoting have taxi information for people staying on the island. The fares are a little different for cruisers. At each pier there is a sandwich board that lists the fares. The fare listed is for the entire cab with up to 4 passengers. The taxi's insurance becomes void if they take more passengers but sometimes they do it anyway and charge an extra couple of dollars. Taxi rates don't increase until midnight, so cruisers need not worry. Here are the current rates. The first rate is from the International pier and the second from Punta Langosta and the ferry pier: Downtown 6/4 Presidente (Caleta) 6/7 Municipal Market 6/5 Dzul Ha 7/7 Fiesta Americana 7/8 Chankanaab 10/10 Playa Corona 10/10 San Francisco Beach 12/13 Paradise Beach 12/13 Northern Hotel Zone 12/8 Airport 12/9 Country Club (Golf) 13/10 Mr Sancho's 14/15 Playa Sol 14/15 Nachi Cocom 14/15 Palancar 17/20 Punta Morena 25/19 Chen Rio 25/21 Playa Bonita 30/24 Punta Sur 30/30 San Gervasio 45/45 (round trip includes waiting for you) Island Tour 50/50 (approximately 3-4 hours) Tour with San Gervasio 80/80 Hope that helps!
