What I Learned from my St. Thomas Friend.......

St. Thomas has always, in my estimation, been a place not to walk. On our very first cruise back in 1980 I walked from the downtown shops to the old Synagogue in town (which is definitely not off the beaten path) on a day when there were several cruise ships in town and I was clearly followed.

Since then I have had occasion to know and get advice from people who live in and around St. Thomas and they have advised to be very careful.

I am glad that you have walked from downtown to Havensight safely but I am not sure that I would.

There were some people from the ship who walked from Crown Bay to town.

I'm not sure how long it took, but they eventually made it.

And like Arzz mentions, the area past Havensight (and Crown Bay for that matter) looks kinda 'seedy' ... But it never stopped crew and some pax.

I'm sure if you walk with a large group, it'll be safer.

It has been 1 1/2 years since we have been to St Thomas (all of our last cruises have been from the west coast.

But when we were last there, the old Yatch Hotel that had been destroyed many years ago by a couple of hurricanes had been torn down and a marina for docking smaller boats was being built. That took care of part of the "seedy" problem of the walk back and forth from town. But not all of it. There is still that one section of low income housing that you have to walk by.

They are building a large condominium complex, shops, yacht club, marina on that property. It is a major construction site. I believe it's originally scheduling was for a 2006 opening but they have A LOT more work to do before it will be ready. I guess it is another 'island time' project. ;)
