Money won at casino

I've never even heard rumors that ship slot machines were anywhere near loose! Occasionally someone will win a couple of hundred. I think I've seen where someone actually hit a royal once. But I'd not hold out to make my retirement fund on any ship's slot machines.

Me? I haven't won a dime. But then, I've never put one in onboard a ship. Living where I do, casinos simply don't appeal to me (much to the chagrin of the cruise lines!)

I have to agree with you. I never heard of any big winners (slots) on any of the ships that I sailed on. If someone wins "big" it's on the tables.

I also don't play because I worked at a casino for over 10 years. No appeal at all!! I can say that the only reason I go into a ship casino is to walk from point A to B or to get change (alot faster than the purser's desk)

We were right there in the casino on the Veendam when the man next to us won $10,000 on the slots. He was paid off and came in the next night and darned if the same man didn't do it again!

DH won $112 on an 18 cent bet on the penny slots :D

I'm not a gambler, but my husband enjoys blackjack. The rule he plays by is that as soon as he doubles his money (starts with $50), he puts $50 back in his pocket and forgets about it. That way he is playing with "house" money only. So sometimes he busts and sometimes he wins, but he never loses any money!

He seems to do pretty well in the blackjack tournaments as well. It's usually $20 to enter and you split the pot between the house and the winners. One time he won $350, the next $550.

I think that it is nice that he wins every now and then, but he looks at it just as entertainment...he enjoys the play either way!

I would assume the man is a shill, a person who acts like a winner to dupe others into playing. From my earlier post, "As far as I know, shipboard casinos face no governmental scrutiny."

I think I am being misunderstood. I don't think like that, but I see what you are saying.

When I answered the question I took into account EVERYTHING.

My example was too simple.

I would never claim to win $ if OVERALL I came out minus what I started with.

At the end of the cruise, I was up 500.00. Whatever I lost during the week is subtracted out. :)

I understood you perfectly. It must have been a little too simple for some folks!!

What does he do when he loses his initial $50 stake, right off the bat? Pull out another $50, or just hang it up for the night?

My husband seems to always have great luck with Blackjack on ships. Everynight he gambles he gives me the chips that are over and above what he brought in with him and the rule is I never give them back to him.

I like that rule! :)

A few nights during the cruise John & I will hit the slots in the casino with $10 or $20 each. I can play mine for an hour at least. He usually loses his within 15-20 minutes. Then we're done there for the evening & go find something else to do. For us, the casino is just a bit of entertainment. Sure wish we could hit for some $$$, tho. :)

My friend plays the slots and is pretty lucky...everywhere. lol. A couple of years ago she was on the O and won $900 the first night out. She spent/gambled most of it during the next few days but on the last night of the cruise was again playing the nickel slots and won 4 grand. We went to a casino in SD...the first 45 minutes of playing slots, she won 1300. *sighs*

On our last cruise on the Volendam in Feb my mother actually asked the casino staff if the slots were government regulated and they told her no.

I was playing the same couple of machines all trip and one day i went to one of them to play and a lady was already there she was getting paid out $3200 or $4200 on a quarter machine and one of the employees said he didn't even know it could pay out that much b/c it hadn't happened on that type of machine before.

towards the end of the trip though i thought i'd try the tables and played some 3 card poker and eventually said 'how hard can it be to get a straight flush?"- 2 hands later i got one and walked away with $240 i think.. it's the only time i've actually come out ahead.

Experienced this while on my first cruise!!!! While DH was nursing a mild case of seasickness, I decided to take my normal $20 and waste an hour or so at the video poker machines. About ten minutes into the hour, I drew a royal flush and the machine paid out more than $1400. Bells rung and a crowd gathered. I had my photo taken, collected my cash, left the casino and called DH. Needless to say, his nausea quickly vanished as he knew that the majority of our vacation tab was covered by RCL! Did I leave the casino immediately after the win - absolutely!! Was I tempted to return during the rest of the cruise??? As I remember, went back later in the week with my original $20 and lost it.

I'm with you Gizmo, mostly I play blackjack and sometimes craps. Last cruise I walked away with a little more than $300. By which I mean more than what I brought to gamble. I look at gambling as a form of entertainment and my stake at the table is the price of admission. Sometimes I lose part or all of my stake, sometime I win, I always have fun at the tables and have met some great people.

Good luck Kathy.

So, what is the most anyone has won on a ship casino? I seem to do well in Vegas and AC - but I always leave all my money behind on the ships. Is it just me?

Kathy

ps I'm on the 11/18 Zuiderdam sailing - if you won big there - what were you playing?

For me, at one time, about $200 at the slots, but I doubt I have ever really won. I always put in more than I get out. I had a client one time (many years ago) who won $2500 the first night. DH plays craps, but plays very little on the ship. I don't think he has ever won more than maybe $50.00.

I don't really know how to play craps - I used to play with a friend of mine and would just do whatever he told me. But I do like to walk by the craps table throw $ down and yell 8 the hard way - sometimes I win - but either way I walk away - cuz that's all i know. maybe i will get a book on craps to read before the cruise.

but you guys have given me a little hope - i will be sure to report back with my winnings after the cruise.

As far as I know, shipboard casinos face no governmental scrutiny. They also have no competition. You can not switch casinos in midstream. I have some translations for you:

"I broke even" means "I lost."

"I didn't do too badly" means "I lost big."

"I won $500" means "I'm not telling how much it cost me to win $500."

I love it, especially the last one. How often do we hear this? I won $500 or whatever? Ask if that was the first or last night, did they come home with any of it, etc? If honest, you will probably hear, well NO.

We love Vegas (once a year) also do Laughlin a couple times a year: to me, winning means I left the place with as much gambling money or more than I arrived with and it doesn't often happen.

Great story for you. On honeymoon, hubby & I were in a bus accident on way from ship to El San Juan. Someone threw a huge beer bottle thru the window and our entire window crashed all over us. We went back to ship and spent hours with doc having glass shaving removed from our scalps w/ tweezers. Hubby had eye patch for several days. We were in bed for an entire day! It was a mess!

Anyway- 2 days later - hit for $2800 roulette in 25 mins! What a trip!

Anyone who says they "usually" win at the casino is, at the very least, fooling themselves. You can "occasionally" win, you can have a run of good luck, but you can't "usually" win. Over the long haul, the casino advantage will catch up to even the luckiest of players.

That is where gamblers live. I think it was Aristophenes who pointed out that self deception is easy. That which a man wishes, so he will believe. For some reason, people seem to enjoy gambling and losing. They often refer to it as entertainment.

Casino operators accept bets on the probability of winning. The gambling customers place the bet on the possibility of winning. That isn't a very good place to be.

This thread has quite a few views and responses. Now, lets start a thread called Money Lost Gambling. It will probably be the shortest lived thread ever to hit the boards. A gambler seems to love to talk about winnings, not what he lost.

I must be an oddball, because I am always ahead at the end of the year. But the reason for this is called discipline and knowing when to walk. Like others I play with the rule of a set amount to "lose". If I lose it, I walk. If I double it, I walk. I average about $300 in Blackjack winnings per cruise. Do I win every cruise, no. But 5 out 6 cruises, I have come out with more money than I started with.

I dont play slots because I view a 95% payback means that 95% of the people paid the 5% of the people that won.

Actually, 95% payback means that for every dollar that is wagered, they will pay back $.95 in winnings. But they're still making $.05 profit of every dollar wagered.

I love to gamble, and probably go to the casino once a month. The last two times I have gone, I've won $600ish. But I know in the long run, I will come out behind. Law of averages.

As a casino stockholder, I sure hope you continue to believe that statement. There are thousands of people who believe just like you. What ever you do, please don't let anyone change your mind.:D

What is so hard to believe, if I walk in with $100 and come out with $200, the casino has LOST $100.
