Three Fashionista's Night Out

Hi all,

Just a little "report"....

As some of you may know, Caviargal and MrsMoose were in NYC yesterday and the three of us got together for dinner at a great spanish/mexican place. The charming MrMoose was there too. I think he enjoyed having a little harem as he kept giggling all evening...ok, well maybe it really was the margarita talking! ;)

So, of course we discussed Caviargal's upcoming wedding cruise! (they'll get off the ship and will be married in Key West) It's just a few weeks away and we're so excited for her! She told us all about the ship's arrangements - the flowers, her wedding gown, her evening wear for formal night. What fun to bring your family on a wedding cruise! Weeks later, the newlyweds will go off alone for a honeymoon cruise, but I'll let her tell you about that.

What we wore....

Even though they don't live in NY, they're New Yorkers at heart! Black, black and more black.

MrsMoose: Black turtleneck, black knit fur vest, black jeans, black patent leather flats w/ cool buckle, beautiful black handbag. Solid black fur trimmed cashmere wrap for outdoors.

MrMoose: Blue cotton button down shirt, leather jacket and his infectious smile.

No handbag, but black camera.

Caviargal: Leopard print scoop neck/long sleeved tee (we all know she loves animal prints!), blue jeans w/ cool metal belt, black chunky low heeled boots, beautiful black woven leather handbag. Belted calf length black leather coat for outdoors.

Me: Olive green open-knit cashmere sweater w/ olive cami underneath, dark pink/magenta silk necklette/scarf, black gaucho pants, suede olive green lace-up mid-heel boots. Burgundy handbag. Black alpaca coat and shawl sized burgundy cashmere scarf.

Cruise fashions were, of course, discussed and a good time was had by all! :D :D :D

I am still not home due to multiple plane delays and finally a cancellation but am halfway there, to Atlanta at least.

What a great night out! Wonderful atmosphere, food and company made for a great evening.

MrsMoose and I shopped on Fifth for a few hours in the morning and then Jane and I "did" Bergdorfs and the meat packing district. I really want to know how the young men and women we saw shopping in the high end boutiques can afford $1000 pair of slacks:confused:. Thanks, Jane, for showing me a new part of town and some wonderful boutiques. More, please:).

Anyway, as usual, NYC had great fashion on display in the stores and on the streets. The coats and boots were to die for but, living in FL, there are only so many winter clothes I can justify.

Can't wait to go back in December for my annual holiday season trip:).

We had a terrific day. I've met Caviargal and MrsMoose before, but they had not met each other 'til yesterday, but I knew they'd get on well.

Actually, I found something that worked already in my closet, a white beaded Tadashi surplice top which looks great with it (from my last NYC trip:)).

I did find a few great things at Loehmans and hope to find more in December.:D

Hoyaheel, thanks for the link! I found two v neck silk rib tops, 3/4 sleeve, which are prefect for FL. No turtlenecks yet but I am still on the hunt!

From which place?? I cannot seem to stop shopping for turtlenecks now--found another one last night--I posted the link (and, maybe a photo) in the Turtleneck thread....

Sometimes it is best to go "shopping" in your own closet! I've been known to "find" new things I stashed off season and forgot about!

How fun for all of you, sounds like a great time :)

Hello ladies,

Caviargal, I hope you made it home safely. Jane, thank you for takeing the time to meet with us.

DH and I had a great time in NYC. It was nice to see you again Jane and to finally meet you Caviargal.

DH and I had a great time in NYC. I got good reports from my cardiologist and internist and saw a specialist for my back with good results.

We ate at a new restaurant called Devin Taverne and I can't say enough good things about it. It's described as rustic but I would call it cozy chic. Same owner as Dylan Prime is our absoulte favorite steak house in NYC (can't say enough good things about that one either). What a delight the owner is, as well as the chef, many top notch high end NYC restaurants have attitude but this one while being up there with Nobu and Babbo, is really "no attitude" but the food is wonderful and certainly better than Bobby Flay's place Bar American. If you want a top notch restaurant in NYC I definitely would put this one on the top of the list as well as Dylan Prime.

Fashion wise, you always see a lot of everyting.

We went to three broadway shows. The last one on saturday Grey Gardens apparently had a lot of celebs but I don't look or notice and usually can't recognize any of them unless they are really next to me. I did see one lady that I recognized, she is the one who gave fashion advice on the today show, I think the editor of InStyle, a blond lady. She was only 2 rows away so I noticed.

Mostly you see black. A lot of black skirts with black tights, a lot of flats, ballet flats are popular as are riding boot look too.

For the most part in all honesty, I took time to not notice so much as what people wore (I looked at more of an overall "package for a little to get a feel for it) but if people were checking each other out, and to be honest, no. Bascially no one really cares what anyone else who they don't know wears. That is really my opinion.

The times when people really notice what you wear is when you go into a store. In restaurants, theatre, and even the famous Bungalow 8 which we went to for all of about 20 minutes (an old aquaintance of mine got me on the guest list as I called in a few favors from way back when) it's really not "looked at". I suppose friends notice each other of course, but can't say I saw any "strangers" looking at people.

At the famous and exclusive Bellman's Bar, at the Carlye Hotel you saw jeans. I noticed this because I really liked the woman's look and even asked her about her jacket as I wanted one. She had on basic jeans (not the desinger ones), a beautiful suede jacket (I did find it in another color and I bought it), a turtle neck sweater with a scarf, the whole look was just so nice and comfy.

Even the fashion editor of InStyle (maybe she is not there anymore) wore what I call a casual look of quality and elegance. She had on a plain black skirt, black tights, a black turtleneck, black boots (or shoes can't remember) and an off white mink jacket. Understated and casual.

Capes are big. Fur trim is big. This is a lot of what was in the stores. Fur is big in general. (seen in stores).

So overall my fashion comments about NYC would be, a lot of black and black and white combos. A lot of animal prints. A "less is more" look for many, a look of casual and understated elegance. I didn't really see showy or flashy looks and not "perfect mactched" except of course for the all black look.I'm really giving a description of what I found at the theatre and the high end stores and restaurants and shopping districts of NYC.

All of these looks for the most part could be put together on any budget and basically suit just about all figures and ages with minor adjustments.

As for the store Jeffreys, well unless you have to be there as I was (my hairdresser is a few doors down) and I finally made it over there as usually I never have time and just rush to another appt, I would say it's not the best shoe place in NYC for choice as it's always written about in magaznes etc. I would say Bergdorfs has a much better and larger selection of shoes and even Barneys and Saks. I was really disappointed with Jeffryes and glad that I never made a special effort to go. But again that is just my opinion.

Mrs. Moose, I'm happy to hear that your doctors gave you positive reports. What a wonderful way to begin the holiday season.

Thank you for your insightful fashion reports. I'm glad to hear that you didn't see alot of judging looks being passed around by independently appointed fashion police. I recall a post this summer where someone mentioned something to the effect that one is judged by their brand of lipstick in New York City. I was taken aback, to say the least.

I've been to New York on numerous occasions and have been thinking of returning with DH and my boys to see a show. I don't think I dress poorly but I was intimidated that I wouldn't have the "right" clothes to attend a theatre performance. Your post has reassured me.

Thank you as well for pointing out that many of the high end looks can be accomplished on a budget. I also wanted to tell you that your posts exude graciousness and I'm willing to bet you made that woman's day when you asked her about her suede jacket. You gave her the utmost compliment!

Have a wonderful Halloween!

Thank you SoxFan, for the kind words and I'm glad you liked what I wrote.

Please don't feel intimidated. I'm sure you will be fine. You see a little of everything in the theatre and in all price ranges. How do I know because I see it on line in the ladies room and from my seat when people pass. But does anyone really "size you up" in the theatre, no, not that I noticed and I really took the time to notice if it's done.

The one time you are really "sized up" is if you enter a high end store.

I don't remember the post you are referring to, but I've yet to see anyone look at a lipstick that another woman has and judge her by it. I don't wear a lot of lipstick, if I do it's during the winter months more as a chapstick and a barely there color, but I do wear nail color, and I'm sure it's the same with a lipstick, not all companies make the exact same shade. So to be judged by a brand of a lipstick is something I don't see happening really. Why would a total stranger care what lipstick you have. Maybe a friend might look and discuss but a total stranger, I really have never heard of it.

When would these people see the lipstick? In the ladies room? I don't understand honestly, at the theatre when it's so rushed to get back during a short intermission no one bothers to stop and look at the next person's lipstick. This is really a new one to me.

As for the rest like clothing and shoes, if you don't wear anything "outlandish" people don't for the most part look. Obviously if someone is wearing something that is "so out there" it can't help but be noticed. Or of course if you see someone sitting next to you or walk in front of you as in my case at the Bellman's Bar then you notice, but basically people are too wrapped up in their own lives than to sit and notice the average person or even care what a total stranger has on. Of course, there will always be people who look regardless of where you are. It's one thing if you are at a private party then it may be judged or looked at, but that is probably the case anywhere as well, but in a public venue, as I say, it really doesn't happen or not that you would notice and certainly not by the majority of people.

Yes, you are right, the woman was very happy and took it as a compliment.

So please go to NYC and enjoy broadway. Even jeans are fine, no problems, the two couples next to me (and I was in the orchestra) had on jeans, why did I notice, they had to pass me to get to their seats and they were from the NYC area I could hear their accents when they talked amongst themselves before the show started, and honestly, the vast majority don't care about what strangers are wearing for the most part. Clean and neat and you are fine.

Jane - Just curious. Why is black the official color of NYC? :)

I know the answer to that one... I was walking thru Central Park one time with khaki slacks...after, my khaki's were spotty with dirt and mud from my walk!!! The black slacks still get dirty....but it doesn't show!

Here's one more vote for mostly black in my closet!!

I remember that thread and I think you're remembering it a little differently. It really was more about in private parties when women who....say are successful on Wall Street or in the Fashion Industry...pull out their lipstick in the ladies room, people will look and see if it's a "brand name" or a drug store brand.

Trust me, no one is looking at your tube of lipstick. :)

..... but I was intimidated that I wouldn't have the "right" clothes to attend a theatre performance. Your post has reassured me.

Good. I'm glad her post reassured you. Don't worry!

Enjoy your time here in NYC!

That is the thread I was thinking of and just as I remembered it. I just can't imagine anyone caring enough what brand of lipstick someone uses. Maybe in the Fashion Industry as it is work related and a business that is all about the aesthetic and image but Wall Street? I wouldn't expect a woman who was bright enough to find success in finance to be so shallow about make up.
