Funship Dollars versus direct onboard credit?

My Wife and I were going to ask our families to begin giving us onboard credit for our future cruises, rather than giftcards or presents for X-Mas and birthdays.

Tried using the search to get some information on Funship Dollars, since the only disclaimer I could find by reading the Carnival site is the fact that Fun Ship dollars need to be mailed in at least 2 weeks before sailing by certified mail which seems to be a wasted extra expense and additional trouble of waiting at the Post Office.

1)Can Fun Ship dollars be redeemed onboard at the Purser's Desk, rather than having to mail them in? (the Carnival site is incredibly sketchy with information on Fun Ship dollars)

2)If I give family members the booking number, is there a phone number they can call and purchase onboard credit for us, without getting funship doillars?

Thanks in advance for any helpful information or any other suggestions.

I'll always give funship dollars as gifts to people who have already booked a cruise. I have also received funship dollars as gifts and also purchased them for myself. You can redeem them at the purser's desk when you board the ship.

I'm not sure about calling and having OBC applied but can't see why it wouldn't work. However, I think the funship dollars are a lot easier.

If they go to the gifts section of Carnival on-line, they should be able to buy funship dollars for you and have them applied directly to you onboard account by putting your booking # in the street address line.

i was wondering how you could prepay on your shipboard acct....we have our son with us this trip, celebrating his discharge from the Air Force...and I am sure he will do some real celebrating...so I figured if I prepaid the excursions and tips that would help alot....but it would be nice to have credit on his acct ahead of time too!

Beverly,

I have been prepaying on our shipboard acct by using the method I learned on this board. Go in to gifts and under Gift Certificate section(Funship dollars) put your booking # in the address line. Carnival will then put it on your ob account instead of mailing out the funship dollars.

Quick question - say I go and add $300 in fun ship $ to my acct and I only use $280' date=' do I get a cash refund or fun ship dollars for next time? I would want to make sure I had cash back in my hand.[/quote']

Haven't cruised yet, (first one leaves Dec 10th,) but everyone here says that you get a check wth your OBC Accounting on the last morning for any monies not used, and that the prusers desk will cash it for you, or you can wait till you get home and cash it.

Thanks a bunch.

That was exactly what I was looking to have done.

I want to make it easy for friends and family to order, but not be a hassle for us, to have to mail in the certificates before the cruise.

The help is greatly appreciated.

Is this true? Has anyone actually received cash back?

Atlasta Cruise: No offense, just wanted to double check on this before I poured money into the OBC account with funship dollars.

  • 3 weeks later...

I had 1000.00 in fun ship dollars pre paid for my cruise on 10-29-2006 out of San Juan. I didn't want to carry a bunch of cash to a strange port or leave it in my cabin unattended. I used some of it but not all and at the end of the cruise when I received my on board statement(bill) there was a check attached for the amount I did not use, more than 500.00.(Shore excursions were pre-paid.) You can cash it at the pursers desk or take it to your own bank. It's your money.:D

Thinking of getting my dad Funship dollars for his New Years cruise- Is there still time to order them and have them mailed to me before Christmas? Thanks Guess the safest is to just call and have it posted to his account before boarding, so I am answering my own question:p

Allow 10 days from the time you order til the time you get them in the mail. Want them for christmas--- hurry and shop online now.

We have used funship dollars for tips- (using them in the casino will cost you 3%)

I book my cruises so far ahead--- then I buy 1 $25.00 gift certificate each pay. By the time I cruise I have several hundreds of dollars for spending.. Its easier for me to save this way-- I dont miss 25.00 and if i keep it myself something always comes up.

Funship dollars do have an expiration date.. for now its sometimes in 2008.

I always got a check-- which you can cash at the pursers desk for free. But I hold on to it so I am not carrying cash home.

I ordered funship dollars online a few days ago. I got the first e-mail for conformation of order. I put in my upcoming cruise booking number in the address line like suggested on these boards, I ordered what I thought I would spend on my cruise (1000.00) so wouldn't have to carry cash on the ship or in flight. Carnival gifts and services replied tonight saying with an order this high they need a fax of my credit card front and back and my authorized signature. This has realy got to bite the big one. I ordered the exact same amount just a few months ago in gift certificates that came to my house. I sent them back, certified mail, before my last cruise 10-29-06. No problems. But it seems now because I tried to use my booking number I am having a problem. I am not sure how to handle this. I wrote back stating if it was a problem for them they could wait till my credit amount clears with the credit card company or they could just mail them and I would mail them back. I then gave my full name, past # and address. What do I do now? I don't want to travel with that much cash but I sure will if they leave me no choice.

The amount refunded from your OB account depends on the amount of money the purser has. I got all cash back for a couple of hundred dollars. I saw some people who were going to be issued a check, but the purser split the amount between a check and cash.

Say I purchase $1000.00 in Fun Dollars to my booking number and spend $1000.00 onboard on excursions, drinks, etc. Will my fun dollars be used to settle my account or is that money I can take in cash throughout the week for my own personal spending?

to take cash off your sign and sail card for personal spending in the ports you will need to go to the Casino and take cash that way- it will also cost you 3% to do it that way.

personal spending onboard is only through the sign and sail card--except at the casino.
