Shopping in New Orleans?

I will be in New Orleans for 48 hours prior to my upcoming Xmas cruise and would love some suggestions for places I can do some shopping prior to boarding. 10 family members will be on the cruise, so last minute gift items are needed plus assorted cruisewear wardrobe items for my sons (and me, too, what the heck!) We'll be staying near the French Quarter, so suggestions for malls or shopping zones close by would be very helpful. I can't use much of what I've found online so far since many of the suggested shopping districts are no longer there or not what they used to be since Katrina.

Shops at Canal Place - for upscale shops. Rivercenter - I've heard many of the stores were closed and are slow coming back, but haven't checked it out myself - plan to do so next week and will let you know. There is also Jax Brewery Shops and many small shops along Decatur Street and Royal Street (in the Quarter). All those places are within walking distance of the French Quarter. If you want to get out of the Quarter I'm sure the shops on Magazine would love your business - but that would require a bus, car or cab.

If you can not find what you are looking for in New Orleans there are 3 malls out in the suburbs, back towards the airport. They are listed below:

Clearview Mall in Metairie

Esplanade Mall in Kenner

Lakeside Mall in Metairie

Lakeside is the better mall, with the most shops.

Here is a web site that has a good list of what is around the area.

  • 2 weeks later...

Other than for clothing, you might want to check out "Santa's Quarters" on Decatur Street in the Quarter - not far from Cafe duMonde.

They have a really huge assortment of things that make fun gifts. I buy lots of stuff there every year. Some Christmas-y, some N.O. souvernier-ish, all really unique. The best shop in the Quarter to me.:)

The vast majority of the shops at Riverwalk are open. There are still some notable gaps, but it's definitely much more open than not.

yes, I checked it out last week and will be going again this week. The majority of the shops are open and encouraging business!!
