Winter cruising out of New York

Recommended Posts

While I know (thanks to Shoreguy's pics), that there may be two feet of snow on the outside decks of the Dawn when we leave Jan 28th, does anyone know if it will be nice and warm on the ship? Is there certain areas (other than outside:p ) where we will need a jacket?

When we were on the Dawn, it was May--but this past February we took the Spirit out of NY and it was fine throughout the ship. A little chilly in some places, but absolutely no different from once we got down into the Caribbean and the chilliness was from air conditioning. It just SEEMED weird wearing shorts or a sundress, so we did not until we got into warmer weather. You'll be fine in jeans/tee shirt (or like that).

Have a great cruise.

We sail out of New York every winter and we have always found the interior of the ship warm and cozy. Each cabin has individual thermostats so you can raise the temperature in New York and increase the air conditioning down south. In winter, I much prefer entering a ship's cabin in New York and hanging my clothes in a closet than boarding a plane and trying to stuff them in an overhead bin. By the afternoon of the second day, we are walking out on deck and on the third day we are in the pool. Enjoy.

I sailed Dawn out of NY one December. It's very comfortable inside, however, I did get a little chilled in the dining rooms. You may want to bring a sweater or a light jacket if air conditioning bothers you.

Have a wonderful cruise!

Wow! Reading the thread on how we got our names makes me feel like I know everybody!

Surfgirl,

We sailed out of NY on January 5th (Can't remember the year.) It was 10 degrees, but it did not snow. There was snow everywhere and ice in the dock. We left late and I was disappointed, but when we sailed past the Statue of Liberty and out of Manhattan in the dark it was an unforgetable sight! I'll never forget it.

You will need winter coats. We are southern California folks and even our warmest clothing was no match for the NY cold. I have NEVER been that cold in my life! I freeze when it drops below 70 here and to be in 10 degree weather was indecribable!

Regardless, I love New York!

Cruised out of NYC every February since she came to NY. It is the same temperature inside the ship in NYC as it is in Barbados. We were never cold and even enjoyed being on deck in NY fishing:D

From the length of the shorts, I'm guessing this isn't a recent photo

So What I'm understading (I hope) is that on the Friday, the 1st full day of our cruise out of NYC, I'll be comfortable indoors in capri's with a t-shirt & light sweater?

What do people normally wear that day? I'm still trying to figure out what I might like to do that sea day since sun worship probably won't be an option.

If it stays this warm it may well be warm enough to sit out on deck and sun bathe-The cabins do have heat controls. I always seem to need a shawl because of the A/C when we get to the tropical climes-brrrrrrrr

Trish-just read the dailies and you'll find all the fun stuff to do inside the ship-I'm looking forward to relaxing!

Denise -- I hope you're right about the weather but NYC has a 70% chance of flurries on Thursday. :(

Where can I get a link to the dailies?

Today it was about 60 degrees in NYC. You never know what kind of weather you will have leaving NYC. We cruised in December two years ago and left the dock with 42 degrees. We wore a heavy sweatshirt and jeans for the sailaway. By midnight we were already in the gulfstream. We could feel the humidity and temps rising before we went to sleep. Next day we were on the deck sunbathing in the afternoon with temps in the low 70's. The last day at sea it was 73 degrees out in the gulfstream east of the Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia). However, it was 25 degrees colder on the mainland.

Now I understand why Bermuda stays warm year round. Gotta love that gulfstream water. We noticed the gulfstream stayed in the low 70's from the caribbean all the way north when we were east of the Delmarva. Now that's a great current. NCL has the best navigation information on the cabin tv of any cruiseline.

Any day is a great day to cruise as long as I'm leaving somewhere cold to go somewhere hot. It sure beats getting stuck at an airport. Just give me an Irish Coffee for my sailaway party and I'm happy.

you can try searching in NCL boards-but that will bring up everytime the word "dailies" is found

there will be:

casino

bingo

art auction

eating

drinking

game room-I'm bringing a new word game called "snatch"

movies

crafty things

reading

port talks

martini clinic

karaoke

trivia

Just got back last Sunday and we wore long pants and short sleeves with sweater or light jacket on the first full sea day and the last. Both the dining rooms and casino tend to be a bit cool and I was more comfortable in 3/4 sleeve tops or light sweaters.

We also got back last Sunday like EileenN and I posted the 10 Day Freestyle Dailies and menus on Webshots.com

It was the best so far.

We were the last one to get the old style Dailies. I found a Daily for the next cruise after us on the last morning. It looks completely different than ours.

Take a look of the old and the new dailies so at least you will have some idea what goes on.

Enjoy your cruise!

No matter what the weather when you embark...bring a coat and shoes/boots that can tolerate snow on your return. We returned in the N'easter last year. No coat or boots! We left on a warm day.

Most people wear slacks that day but I'm sure you will be fine in Capri's.

You will have "too much" to do...so much to do..so little time:confused:

You will have a "daily" on arrival and there are many things to do:)

Wants2fly,

Thanks for posting both the old and new dailies. I noticed the old one had early bird restaurant specials and the new one didn't. I hope NCL hasn't done away with these. We travel with 2 kids so it will be $60.00 at the Bistro instead of $30.00. Looking forward to a complete new set of dailies.

They had the early specials every night on our cruise this year. It's the first time I've seen them offer that. Usually it's only been the first or the first and second nights.

They seem to vary from cruise to cruise. Some offer them only the first night, others offer them every night and others don't offer them at all. I assume NCL has a computer that determines which cruises need them and which ones don't?

There are cargo pants that have those fold-up button gizzies that allow you to make them into calf-length "capris." As for the top, I'd wear something that you can layer. Of course, sweats (or are they called pantsuits) always look nice -- the kind with the hood and zippered front with pockets.

There's so much to do on the ship you won't miss going outside. I think it was the 3rd day that we warmed up.

We boarded, unpacked, stuffed all of our NY clothes into the suitcases and shoved them under the bed. The sad part is having to get themout and USE them on the return voyage! Waaaaaa brrrrrrrrrrrr!

I don't believe they offered it at all on the Majesty in June. Maybe it has to do with the number of reservations they take on the first day.

I was able to wear a T shirt and jeans on the Dawn, November 26, while we were on deck for sailaway. We got very lucky with the weather. That was the last I saw of my jeans for 11 days until we were back in NY again.

I guess it really depends on the demand.

Both time on Dawn and there were 50% off on Speciality Restaurants before 6pm everyday. The last cruise, they even set up a stand in front of the Receiption Desk on Deck 7 for reservation EVERYDAY. Of course both times were considered as "low season" but the ship was full.

Again, I find the new style Daily not as informative as the old one but maybe they will modify it later.
