lidorose Posted January 26, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Hi, we are on the Century's May 17 British Isles cruise. I saw on cruisecal.com that the ship docks at Felison Terminal in Amsterdam (IJmuiden). Is this the same as the Cruise Terminal/Pier that everyone keeps referring to? I guess I was under the impression that the Cruise Terminal was the Passenger Terminal rather than Felison. Anyway, if Felison is different, what are our Schiphol/ship transportation options other than a cab? Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for a CHEAP hotel in a safe part of the city? (small is fine as long as it's clean w/ private bathrooms) We would like something for under $100 with free transportation to Schiphol. That's a lot, but thanks for any/all suggestions. IJmuiden Felison Terminal is NOT the cruise terminal in Amsterdam. In this case you will dock about 15 miles west of Amsterdam, at the beginning of the Northseacanal, next to the Northsea. No terminal there...just a quai. IJmuiden is an industrial port with some beachactivities. Your best transport to Schiphol or Amsterdam will be the Celebrity transfers. Taxis will cost at least about Eur.60,- or more one way. Also I doubt if there will be plenty of taxis. IJmuiden has 1 hotel, Holiday on the beach, rather isolated. http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/ijmke?_requestid=50404 Beter choose a hotel in Amsterdam or one of the Schiphol airport hotels. To/from Schiphol into Amsterdam there is frequent trainconnections. I was wondering why Century wasnot on the list of the Amsterdamport, it now looks because the ship will stay in IJmuiden and not sail all the way to Amsterdam, which is no good news to many passengers. lidorose Posted January 26, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Thanks, Ine, that helps. We will keep our eye on cruisecal - if the port doesn't change, then it looks like we'll be getting ship transfers. Any less-than-$100 hotel suggestions, anyone? Meribeth Posted January 26, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Wow -- Thank you both for this post. I assumed we were leaving from the cruise terminal in Amsterdam. Our cruise is in September. Rose, Can you report when you get back? Is there a train to this other port? We'll be in Amsterdam before the cruise.
lidorose Posted January 26, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Meribeth, Your may very well be at Amsterdam since you are not on the same cruise as I. Check http://www.cruisecal.com. If you are at IJmuiden it will say so.
Meribeth Posted January 26, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 26, 2007 I had checked cruisecal last week. I just assumed IJmuiden was the port at Amsterdam. I didn't even think about there being another port. That's why I'm so grateful for your post. Our cruise was originally scheduled for Rotterdam and I was excited about the change to Amsterdam -- but now I'm not so pleased. (I'll get over it). We are planning to take a train out of Amsterdam to Paris at the end of the cruise. It leaves at 9:30 am. I'm trying to figure out if we can make that train. Ine Posted January 26, 2007 #7 Share Posted January 26, 2007 IJmuiden has no longer a trainstation. The closest will be in Driehuizen, which is still a few miles away. It is a very small station, so taxis will be scarce. First you better check if the ship really docks in IJmuiden Felison. I just found the calender of the cruiseterminal Amsterdam city center on which Century is mentioned: http://www.ptamsterdam.nl/site/kalender.php To give you an impression: on top of this website you will find a map of Northseacanal. Amsterdam is on the right side, while IJmuiden is on the far left. Distance between those 2 cities around 15 miles or more, depending what road you travel. http://noordzeekanaal.web-log.nl/noordzeekanaal/ For you information I just send an e-mail to the cruise-terminal Amsterdam to check where the ship will dock. I expect an answer after the weekend (it is fridaynight here now), will report back when I know more.
Meribeth Posted January 26, 2007 #8 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Thank you so much for all your help. I looked at the PTA website and our cruise is listed. But I'll feel much better when you get a response to your email. I have know cruisecal.com to be wrong before but it's normally a good source of info. drk Posted January 26, 2007 #9 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Thank you so much for clearing this up Ine! Hopefully we will dock at the terminal in Amsterdam for our May 17 Century cruise (as well as all others).
RMSeadog Posted January 26, 2007 #10 Share Posted January 26, 2007 I just got off the phone with Captain's Club and they where adamant that Century is going to dock in Amsterdam. I explained about other sites saying that Century was to be docked in IJmuiden and again was told the where no change of ports. We don't much care where we dock. Like someone smarter than me once said: "It's the journey not the destination that's important". ~ Rick

Ine Posted January 27, 2007 #12 Share Posted January 27, 2007 Already this morning I got a reply to my e-mail regarding the docking of Century in Amsterdam. Good news...it will be the cruise terminal at Amsterdam citycentre, which is the best place to be. A very nice terminal close to the city. Last summer I had the pleasure of visiting Century in Amsterdam. Also I have made photos of the ship while cruising through Northseacanal. Click on one of the albums you want to see at: http://s73.photobucket.com/albums/i208/Inevd/ I was surprised IJmuiden was mentioned as they donot have the facilities of handling a turnaround for a large ship. Have a great cruise!
