Explorer - Seasickness Question

Recommended Posts

We're cruising on Explorer on the Holiday Sailing on December 23, and, we have a dear friend who will be alone during this upcoming holiday season and, we're trying to encourage to book the cruise and come with us. Our friend has never cruised before and, she does suffer from motion sickness. This is the main reason she is resistant to the idea - but does like the idea of traveling with us during the holidays.

Any ideas? Stories? Suggestions that might help to get her to give it a try and join us?

Thanks

I too have a problem with easily getting car sick, sea sick etc. Have since I was a child. I used the patch on 1st 2 cruises, but it has terrible side affects for me. very dry mouth, so on our last sailing Jan 20th 2007 just got back, I used Bonine less drowsy and never had an issue. the day back was a little bit rougher and could feel a little more motion but even then never felt sick. so tell your friend to get out there. It will be fine.

I also get VERY seasick in fact I got sick one time on a kyack (sp)

so last cruise I took one bonine friday night before the cruise and another one saturday night day of the cruise well I did feel sick saturday night so I went to the room and took another bonine and within half hour I was back having the time of my life. So from that point on I took 2 everynight and had no side effects.

Explorer handles the waves pretty well. Two years ago, we had rough seas (20-30 foot swells some nights) and found it more irritating than nauseating (since I couldn't walk a straight line and I don't drink - maybe I should have...ha ha ha).

Luckily, I don't get seasick, but a friend of mine does and she used a chewable tablet (that works in 4 minutes) and can be found OTC. I was called nausies (not sure on spelling). I've also heard that the sea bands work pretty well with no side effects.

Also, I know that some people have said that the water is a bit rougher when leaving from the eastern ports, such as NY/NJ, so might want to be prepared for that. We are going on the 11/23 cruise and this is our first time from NJ, so will have a better idea after that.

My mom is afraid of being out in the water and no matter what we can't get her to go with us, so my dad goes without. Not too many spouses would be as understanding.

We will be on that same Explorer crusie with you and I tried to talk my friends into going, the problem is for a first time to cruise it can be a tough one if you do get sea sick. Your in choppier waters here in NY and NJ and your 12 days of cruising. I would recommend someones first time if they could possible get sick, should try a much shorter cruise. Being sick for 12 days could really stink. I would hate to be the one who suggested she take the trip and then she be sick the whole time. Anyway I have never really gotten seasick but as I get older I am getting concerned. One flight I got slightly sick for a second and then a couple of moments on the Voyeage when I felt the movement I had to get my mind off of it. It could all be psycological but who knows. We are sailing the Adventure in 17 days and I just purchased 2 boxes on Boninne to take with me. I intend to use them because getting sick would not be fun. Good luck whatever you decide.

Tell your friend to go along. You never know. I get carsick, sick on a deep sea fishing trip and puked on a very crowded beach after crawling out of my kayak on my hands and knees.

I cruised a 10 day Alaska last summer and took everything imaginable with me and never felt a thing. Believe me, that boat rocked and I was not sick one single second. It was a shocker!

When we went on Explorer last year, there were some very big swells - I think the Captain made the mistake of telling us exactly how big they were! (18-20 feet) There were a lot of sick passengers, I won't lie to you. A friend of ours had to have shots, it was so bad for her. However, I only felt it slightly the first night, and then I was fine. I would highly recommend the SeaBands wrist bracelets; they really do work with no drug-y side effects.

Explorer is magnificent - I'm sure you'll all have a great time!
