EggDropErin Posted February 1, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 1, 2007 I can't believe it! While at our travel agency, I registered myself, DH, DF, and DM in a drawing for a chance to go on the Liberty Pre-Innaugural cruise. She won!!!! She has until 5pm today to accept her prize. I'm concerned because she doesn't seem overly thrilled...you have to pay your own airfare...but I keep telling her it's a once in a lifetime opportunity! Of course, I am assuming she is going to take me along. Regardless, I told her if she doesn't want to go, to ask and see if I could have the prize. This is so exciting, yet so nerve-racking! Anyone have any tips on how to convince her just how special this trip would be? I don't want her to reject this prize.

jst4fun715 Posted February 1, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 1, 2007 Congrats to her and hopefully you! If she doesn't want to go, could she just give it to you? I have no idea how these things work since I never win anything!!!:p
EggDropErin Posted February 1, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted February 1, 2007 All I know is that it's something like a one day cruise in May. I don't yet have all of the details. I don't know if she can give it to me or not. Either way, I sure hope I can get to go!!!
EggDropErin Posted February 1, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted February 1, 2007 Oh, and I think she said it goes out of New Jersey.
kc320 Posted February 1, 2007 #6 Share Posted February 1, 2007 She may be concerned because of the tax aspect of this "free" trip. Unfortunately Uncle Sam will want his share of the market value of this trip next year at tax time. Normally the fine print in these type contests prohibt the transfer of the prize, but each one is different.

I don't know if she can give it to me or not. Either way, I sure hope I can get to go!!! It may not be worth the cost of the flight for only a one day cruise. Does she even get to sleep in a room over night or is it a day cruise?
EggDropErin Posted February 1, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted February 1, 2007 Hmmm...I don't know if it's an overnight or not. She was sketchy with the details, and I don't remember what it said when I put our names in the drawing. LOL I'd still take the cruise, even with the flight and taxes. That's just me though. alphakitty Posted February 1, 2007 #9 Share Posted February 1, 2007 I found this on the web....sounds like the one. :) 1-night inaugural sailing from Cape Liberty Cruise Port, NJ on May 6th, 2007 Includes free meals, drinks, and gratuities. Cabins will be assigned - no requests can be honored. Access to onboard spa and casino at your own expense.
vesw01 Posted February 1, 2007 #10 Share Posted February 1, 2007 It is going somewhere or just docking back in NJ. Guess it all depends on how much you are willing to spend and how much you can drink (to earn the cost back). Sounds like fun, I would almost do it for the fun of it - but remember if they board you at 1pm and you get off at 8am - that was one quick evening. Annefran Posted February 1, 2007 #16 Share Posted February 1, 2007 AAA was running a similiar contest of a one night stay on Freedom I think. I think they lure you in with the one night stay to entice you to book the whole week and don't include airfare. Not sure how the one-night stay thing would work. Do you go out to sea with the ship, then fly home from wherever the first stop is? Doesn't make sense, why don't they give away the whole cruise voyage.... rsscaptain Posted February 1, 2007 #17 Share Posted February 1, 2007 My first cruise was one that I won! LOL I'm glad I went and I had a good time, but it was no deal! They get you either way it seems. But I'd still go if it were me.

I was under the impression that they took you out into international waters for the night and returned. That way they could open up the casino. Tell your mom you'll treat her to a couple of days in a nice hotel to unwind afterwards. Maybe the shortness of the cruise is what concerns her (she might get worn out from all the air travel in such a short time period). Or that you'll take it for her - there must be some way for her to transfer it to you, esp. since you're family :D !

I wasn't sure why they would give a one night stay......then yes go for it by all means! I live in NJ, so I would have snapped it up in a minute.

It is a one-night cruise to nowhere that leaves from NJ and returns to NJ the next morning. We did a similar one last year on the Freedom that was a two night cruise pre-inaugural out of Boston. These cruises are not part of a normal 7 night itinerary.
KikiKruiser Posted February 1, 2007 #23 Share Posted February 1, 2007 It's otherwise known as a "cruise to nowhere." I've been on several 1 and 2 day cruise to nowheres for pre-inaugurals, and you do sail far enough out that the casinos can be opened (if there are casinos onboard). They're really fun if you really really want to see what the (new) ship is all about and take a sampler on a cruise line you've never tried before. There's no such thing as a "free" anything, really, so you just have to decide if it's worth it to incur the extra costs for airfare, taxis, possible hotel, possible meals, etc. But they are fun!!:)
