wiks Posted February 10, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2007 :) Not including Istanbul and Venice, any suggestions on which ports to explore on your own versus an organized tour?

jfb128 Posted February 12, 2007 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2007 We did our own thing in Delos, Mykonos, Santorini and Dubrovnik with the help of a Fodor's guidebook. We booked private tours in Kusadasi, Taormina, Rhodes, Athens and Amalfi/Positano. We took the ships' tour in Kotor. We used cabs in Dubrovnik and Santorini to see some additional sights from where we docked.
Andee Posted February 12, 2007 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2007 We toured on our own, having done research in various gudebooks and websites, in Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, and Dubrovnik. We hired private guides in Athens (Spiros) and Amalfi (Giovanni from tourofitaly.com).
brian_uk Posted February 12, 2007 #6 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Just make sure you are on deck or on your balcony (if you have one) for the approach to Kotor. The ship will head north along the Adriatic and turn East into the long approach to the Port which from memory takes at least 2 hours. A fabulous ride through the mountains and you end up on what appears to be a lake at the edge of Town. About 15 minutes before you arrive you will pass a very small island with a tiny church. We were told to take a taxi there (15 minutes) and you then take a small boat across.....so peaceful. When we were there Kotor was having one of its frequent Power Cuts (so we were told) but it was a great place with lots of little shops in the walled area. The power was restored soon after and we thought it was one of the best places we visited. Brian
