LHP Posted February 23, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2007 I was very sad to read that the Mardi Gras (after being "retired" from Carnival and bounced from one cruise line to another) was finally sent to cruiseship heaven in 2003. That got me to wondering if that same fate as befallen the Carnivale????

Curt Jerome Wild Posted February 23, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2007 MrPete! What a great website and source of information. There were a few ships that I sailed on when I was a baby and kid that I wondered about... Seeing the pictures of them instantly brought back memories! Thanks! Smiling Cruiser Posted February 24, 2007 #11 Share Posted February 24, 2007 Thank you for the link. The Carnivale was my first cruise and as you can see, I'm a cruise junkie now! Illinoisgal, I thought that ship was huge when I first saw it from the pier. Eighteen years and ten cruises later I know better and I love the larger ships. Thanks for making me smile.:)
Vanessa L Posted February 24, 2007 #12 Share Posted February 24, 2007 The Carnivale was also my first cruise in July 1984. The ships were very small by today's standards; 20-30,000 tons. And there were some back in that day that were less than 20K. My, how things have changed :)
dougnewmanatsea Posted February 25, 2007 #13 Share Posted February 25, 2007 Wow I dont think I would like being on "that small " of a ship. How big were they? She is not that small at all - much larger than today's "small ships" like the Seabourn or Silversea ships, for example. At 32,000 GT she is not much smaller than Carnival's current smallest ship, HOLIDAY. Even though today's new ships are behemoths, and she may seem comparatively small, but she is still a pretty large ship. I visited her last year and you can see a photo gallery here. deck 9 001 Posted February 28, 2007 #14 Share Posted February 28, 2007 Hi Doug, Thanks for posting the link to your photos of Topaz. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing them and they brought back very fond memories of when I cruised in this ship. Your photos are great. Mike
deck 9 001 Posted March 2, 2007 #15 Share Posted March 2, 2007 What a surprise to learn that The Topaz was calling at Keelung yesterday 01 March. I went to see the ship and take some shots. Here is one photo of The Topaz as she looks now. Regards, Mike
sapper1 Posted March 10, 2007 #16 Share Posted March 10, 2007 I sailed on the Carnivale when she was only a few months old and known as the Empress of Britain. It was a crossing from Saint John, New Brunswick to Liverpool in January of 1957. I was 11 years old at the time and it was very exciting for me. It was a very beautiful ship. MrPete Posted March 10, 2007 #17 Share Posted March 10, 2007 Last weekend, I was enjoying some gaffaws watching High Anxiety, as they were airing in on HDTV, and what does my DD first notice on the wall is a Carnival logo. I back it up, and I find there are two posters right there on the wall, Carnival, all right, listing both the Mardi Gras and the Carnivale. Odd seeing a 30 year old ad. BTW, it's in the part where Mel Brooks and Madelyn Kahn are dressed as two old Jewish folk, trying to get past security in the airport.
