Are most Guarantee cabins not good?

What do you think? We've been upgraded twice and both times we were in noisy (to us) areas. Just wondering what you all think.

Have you gotten an upgrade that was wonderful (no kinks such as next to the laundry room, steward's closet, underneath the gym, disco, or casino)?

We have been upgraded a few times and the room given to us was great. A couple of times we booked and payed for lowest balcony and were upgraded to a suite. I feel it is worth it if you don't care where your located on the ship and cruising by yourself. If going with friends or family you may not want upgrading guarentee.

As you can see we have quite a few cruises and have pretty much given up on thinking we will be upgraded. The best we have been upgraded is from 4A quarantee to 4D. Really not that big a deal. That cabin was also right up front under the showroom. The only benefit is that when we sail with my parents who get a suite they usually do move us somewhere near them. I would love to get one of these great upgrades we hear about. It certainly doesn't have anythinhg to do with how often you sail with them. Oh well, we'll keep sailing besides we have gotten to like the Pirate deck ( RRR). Cindy

I apparently pissed the upgrade fairy off a bit. Booked a 4A Gty, got a 4D. Not complaining hell happy to be on the boat, but not as lucky as some, luckier than others. Got a great location on the Empress deck so noise shouldn't be a problem.:)

When I go to Carnival's website and "pretend" to book a cruise, when I get to the part that tells me I can book a Cat 8 Guarantee on a particular deck, am I sure to get at least the deck I choose even if a don't pick a particular cabin #?

It has nothing to do with placing you in a sucky cabin, its about opening up the cabin you are in to someone that is looking for your cabin. Then you get bumpped and bumpped as the ship fills up.

My Upgrades from a Cat. 1a has been Cat. 6a and Cat 9a mini suite.

But lets face it, there are sucky cabins on every cruise ship. There's even a thread about which cabins to avoid. Do you think Carnival reps book these cabins to new cruisers? I'm thinking that at some point, they(Carnival) do "upgrade" some people to these bad cabins.....just a thought.

Don't get me wrong, any day on a cruise is better than a day at work!!!!!! I always take ear plugs, so noise isn't a problem for me, but my kiddos won't wear them.

Happy cruising to all.

I see you have been on many cruises too CINDY. My PVP once told me if you get on a waiting list early that is great but even better upgrading and/or room location if you are a past guest. I feel it is true the more Carnival cruises taken the better your treated. Lately Carnival has been improving with many things for us.:)

DH and I booked a 5A (outside with porthole) Guarantee on the Celebration last year and we didn't know what cabin we were assigned to until we dropped the luggage off at the pier and the longshoreman checked his manifest. We were assigned an oceanview, midship, on the Empress Deck -- a nice upgrade.

That was our only guarantee on 12 cruises and I'm not sure I would do it again. The only reason we did it was because we booked late and that was pretty much all that was left. I prefer knowing what I'm getting. We sailed on the Holland America's Zuiderdam in December and booked a balcony cabin midship. I later discovered that some of the balcony cabins have solid steel railings without any glass -- I would have been very unhappy to discover we couldn't sit on the balcony and see out, we would have to stand up all the time.

It seems many people get really good upgrades when they book Guarantees. If you want to be sure you are avoiding certain scenarios, I think it is best to book a specific cabin and not a Guarantee.

Holland America - 2004, 2006

Carnival - 1995, 1998, 2006, 2006, 2007

NCL - 1994, 1996, 1997, 2003

Royal Caribbean - 2002

Two cruises ... upgraded two times.... both booked IS gty once got an oceanview and once got a 5A obstructed view.... neither cabin was bad... first was all the way aft on Fantasy, second was midship on the main deck on the Miracle....

I know my cabin won't get upgraded on the Liberty .... had to book handicapped for my hubby.... but got one on the lido deck forward... maybe the other 4 cabins in my group who are all IS gty will end up on the lido also......

...only gty we booked, we got upgraded, then downgraded to the lowest level of the gty at the pier. It was the best room we have ever had.

I think every ship has a handful of undesireable rooms due to noise, those probably go to the gty crowd or the uninformed that just book them... and there will always be the obnoxious passengers that can make ANY location bad - I like to plant drugs and report them, gets them off the ship at next port ;)

Noise would be my only issue, everyone talks about location, but I could care less, even on the Liberty I never had to be anywhere in such a hurry that location would every be an issue. I enjoy the stairs and enjoy walking across the ship.

Hubby and I booked our first guaranty for our sailing on the Freedom this coming May. I'll let you know what we wind up with.

We booked a 6B Ocean View guaranty. I've checked out the Freedom's deck plans, so I know that the lowest deck we should be on is the Main Deck, and that we will have an Ocean View.

My son recently went on his first cruise (as an adult, not with us, I mean) and he and his friend booked an inside guaranty on the Sensation and were upgraded to an Ocean View (big window, not portholes). I thought that was pretty lucky!
