Is Tahitian Ship going away in the future?

Just got back from the March 17th sailing aboard the Tahitian Princess. We were at the captains cocktail party and happened to start talking to a gentlemen there. Turns out he's the captain from the sea princess. He was taking over the Tahitian ship while the present captain went home for a well needed rest. He told my DH and I that that down the road the Tahitian princess ship might not be sailing there. Has anybody heard anything about this? I'm not saying it will be in the NEAR future but I was sad to hear that there was a possibility that eventually they would stop sailing French Polynesia. Maybe he meant that another ship would replace it I'm not sure just wanted to know if anyone has heard or to keep your ears open.

Anyway we had a great time I hope it doesn't happen.

That rumor has surfaced before.

When Princess originally leased the ship (later she was purchased), they had to agree to keep either Pacific Princess or Tahitian Princess in French Polynesia for at least two years.

This condition was set by the French Government, who owned the "pink slip" on the ships, having provided most of the funds for their construction.

Th two years is now long gone, and Princess does not have to keep a ship there permanently; but will probably do so as long as it continues to sell as well as it has been.

"Princess outlines seasonal Tahiti deployment

25/4/2007

Tahitian Princess in 2008 will sail in French Polynesia from January through May and from October through December. The ship will contiue its 10-day roundtrips from Papeete to Huahine, Rangiroa, Raiatea, Bora Bora and Moorea.

Princess Cruises has fulfilled its five-year obligation to French Polynesia, according to Maina Sage, minister of tourism and the environment, who added that the company will continue its partnership by returning in coming years.

Tahiti Tourisme ceo Dany Panero described the working relationship with Princess as ‘extremely professional and efficient.’

Princess began roundtrip cruising from Papeete through French Polynesia in 2002, when Tahitian Princess joined the fleet. Since then, the line has carried more than 135,000 passengers to the region on that ship alone. Other Princess vessels also visit French Polynesia.

As separately reported, Tahitian Princess will sail in Alaska during the summer next year, between its spring and fall seasons in French Polynesia."

The summer of 2008 the TP will be doing 14 day Alaskan cruises during the summer to provide passengers with more interesting itineraries in Alaska. TP will continue to cruise Tahiti when not in Alaska. This is according to Seatrade Insider News announced today.

If true, that would make some great repositioning cruises getting the ship to and from Alaska.... :D

Tahitian Princess joins ’08 Alaska lineup 25/04/2007 Princess Cruises’ 2008 Gulf of Alaska program will feature five vessels including, for the first time, Tahitian Princess. That 670-passenger ship will sail a longer, destination-intensive ‘Connoisseur’ route visiting less frequented ports such as Valdez. Diamond Princess, Sapphire Princess, Coral Princess and Island Princess return to the Gulf route of seven-night ‘Voyage of the Glaciers’ cruises between Vancouver and Whittier. Tahitian Princess replaces this year’s Pacific Princess but instead of the seven-night, mid-week departures that ship will offer in 2007, the newcomer will branch out with 14-day routes roundtrip from Vancouver.

Charlie Ball, president of Princess Tours, said these ‘Connoisseur’ itineraries are ideal for the growing number of returning visitors to Alaska who want to see more. Kodiak, Seward and Valdez will be visited, along with Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and B.C.’s Victoria.

All Princess Gulf sailings visit Glacier Bay. The seven-day cruises can be combined with one of 34 land tour options for a 10- to 16-night vacation.
