Moose in May?

Don't get your hopes up. But spending a lot of time out on deck in your close land sailing areas may have a view?? Necessary will be a good pair of binouclars with wide angle the way to go for marine wildlife viewing. 10x50's have served me well. icon_smile.gif

We saw moose in May - in downtown Anchorage. They have so many green areas that wild life is often seen in town. We saw it from the train on the Seward to Anchorage trip.

On that route, it will likely be Glacier Bay that offers your best chance at seeing a Moose from the ship. As BQ mentions, it will be very, very, lucky if you do though.

On Sunday, May 23rd, your ship will be in Glacier Bay from 07:00 to 16:00.

There has been a recent mini population boom in Moose in the Glacier Bay area (Lower Bay).

And, your ship will stop in the lower bay to embark a park ranger interpretor. That is a great area to watch the eastern shoreline. (Starboard side)

This link may assist. (Look at the animal repopulation info)

Hope this helps ...

We saw a young bull moose at Eagle River Nature Center in late May right next to the trail and right next to some trail workers who warned us that we were too close, which was about 50' and we were not trying to get closer, but he was moving towards us Except for four or five in denali, that was the only one we saw in our two weeks of wildlife searching.

I don't know about seeing moose directly from the cruise ship, but May is a good time to see Moose - especially cows with calves. When the vegetation is not high they are more visible eating the new shoots. Later in the season they are there but hidden behind the vegetation. August/September they seem to come into towm more trying to get away from bears.
