Strange anti-cruise comment

This week I was at a meeting and afterwards a friend asked me why I love cruising. As I started to talk about, let's face it, my favorite conversational topic, another woman came up and said to her "We HATE cruises!!!" When I asked her why, she said because it is repulsive how much people eat, that some people even order two entrees! This seemed to make her absolutely furious.

So a few things came to mind- first, why would she be paying attention to what other people are eating? It would never cross my mind to be interested in what's on anyone else's plate besides my own. Second, if some people enjoy two entrees, who cares? It's your vacation- eat seven entrees if you want. Third, there are so many facets of cruising. I would have a great time even if the food wasn't good or it took a long time to embark or my steward forgot to fill the ice bucket because I'm still on a beautiful ship sailing with my dear family to fun destinations. When I read a review of a cruise and one little thing that the reviewer didn't like- like being asked to take her child out of the casino (no kidding, I read that one)- means the staff is rude, the cruiseline is no good etc etc. If everything has to be perfect for a person to have fun, I guess that person never has fun. Obviously cruising isn't the right vacation for everyone but I just thought that her attitude was over the top.

My guess would be anyone who would offer such a lame excuse as that for not liking cruises, is hiding the real reason....she just can't afford a cruise vacation and won't admit it.

Well, she has an interesting opinion.

It wouldn't be enough for me to stop cruising, but she brings up a valid point..there are some people that "don't need to eat" two entrees. There are some who eat aimlessly on cruises beause they paid for it and feel they are entitiled to it.

I don't think just because one enjoys it is a valid reason. I agree with her that some people are gluttons.

But it wouldn't be enough to stop me from cruising, and I don't think I'd get repulsed by it.

If I saw someone piling their plate with food or eating a lot of entrees ,and they had a body that doesn't warrant them needing to eat so much, then I'd feel sorry for them.

I suppose there are some people who go on cruises only for the food. On the shipboard romance thread there are some women who seem to go on the cruises only to hook up with crew members for sex, so I guess everyone has their own reasons why they do or dnn't cruise.

Ok-my SO and I like to eat. So sometimes we will order 2 entres or two deserts or even go to the buffet before our late seating dinner. I can't believe what we chose to do would matter to anyone. We even joke about how much we eat on a cruise.Usually diet before and after a cruise!I just enjoy eatting what I don't have to cook. We live in the boonies and our choice of restaurents are McDonalds or Subway so food on a cruise is a real treat for us and we make the most of it.I just hope we never sit with anyone who is bothered by this but if we do-then I guess they have the option of changing their table.

I had a couple of doubles of different items but it was to try it because I love to cook and wanted to see if I wanted to take the time to learn to cook it. It is only served once on a cruise, sooooooooo. I did share with my table mates (husband and friends from home) so we could all take a taste. Some of the items were served with French portions (small). If there is a person that weighs 250 or so, they burn more calories just walking than someone that weighs 100 so they may not gain weight eating 2 of some items. IMO don't look next time. LOL

Well, I think thats a different reason..maybe the lady who got repulsed initially was repulsed for a different reason..I would maybe do what you did because I like to cook.

If someone has a valid reasont to eat more than two entrees, so be it..if someone is a glutton because they are a glutton, then that's what It think is sad.

A valid reason??? Someone call the portion police...STAT!!!

I hardly think that anyone has to justify their food choices.

Nobody has to, correct. My point was that some people are greedy. Then they wonder why they have a weight problem. Plain and simple. But not everybody who is greedy has a weight problem.

Hey R, I like your screen name ;)

Okay, now back on topic ...

Were were recently on a cruise where our tablemates had 3 courses BEFORE the main entree' and then the waiter was kind enough to provide them with 3/4 servings each of Lobster tail, which was then followed by a couple of desserts. Now that's a meal!!!!! But they really enjoyed their meal (no, they weren't overweight), and it was fun to see what they could consume next! We didn't feel pressured to "keep up" either so all 4 of us had a terrific meal.

Some people seem to get fixated on one issue and really miss the enjoyment that a cruise brings when you RELAX and get into the groove of sailing! :)

Doesn't bother me if someone orders more than one entree and eat it. What DOES send me up a wall is when people pile their plates and then don't eat it. They seem to think simply because they've prepaid, that entitles them to waste food. Who untimately pays for wasted food ? Yep...you and I. Wonder if they waste food like that at home. Take what you want but eat what you take.

Interesting thread.

I'm just new to cruising but am looking forward to more (next one in July).

It's a change for me because my favourite topic of conversation is usually Bali (I've been 19 times)

Have to admit I love the food on the cruises. I do eat more than I usually do. But hey I'm on holidays. Some people do go overboard but that's their choice.

As long as there's enough chocolate for me. LOL

........another woman came up and said to her "We HATE cruises!!!"

Kinda makes you wonder if anything would make this lady happy?! There are folks who see lemons and make lemonade....then there are those who see lemons and eat them...."sour" on life in general, I think. I pity her, and those who have to live w/her.

(Never thought about ordering two entrees but now I might!}

I often order two entrees - certainly not every evening, but at times. I'm a retired chef from N.O., and it's interesting to me the various ways other chefs prepare their cuisine. If I order it, I eat it - no waste. I happen to be a petite woman, even after all those years in kitchens, but even if I were obese, it should be of no concern to anyone else what I eat.:D

And how do you plan to judge (and why are you judging anyway?) what someone else does or doesn't "need" to eat? Let me guess ... by how much they weigh?

It can't be because you understand their metabolism, medical history, and have carefully monitored their caloric expenditure vs. intake all day ...

I don't think just because one enjoys it is a valid reason. I agree with her that some people are gluttons.

If enjoying what you eat isn't a valid reason for eating, then cruiselines can replace all their menus with cans of Ensure.

If I saw someone piling their plate with food or eating a lot of entrees ,and [sIC] they had a body that doesn't warrant them needing to eat so much, then I'd feel sorry for them.

Again, how (and why?) are you judging whether their body does or doesn't warrant them eating more or less? Are petite people supposed to eat a small salad because you've judged that's what is "warranted" for their size and weight?

Can people who weigh a lot eat a lot more, or does their body not "warrant them needing to eat so much" because you think they should weigh less than they do?

Can you weigh a lot because you're tall, muscular and fit and eat a lot without censure? Is it just people who also weigh a lot but it isn't so artfully distributed that are being criticized?

When I was a competitive athlete, where would I have fallen on the judgment scale? Because I could eat two enormous lunches, breakfast, dinner, snacks (enjoying every bite I might add) and was barely able to maintain what was an "ideal" weight for my height and build. Was I a glutton?

I'm sorry if I'm singling you out, because clearly you have a lot of company here ... but it seems to me completely out of line for anyone to be passing judgment on others if they eat what they order and enjoy it.

To let the absurd illustrate my point:

Is closet eating unoffensive (read here, room service)?

Are you all monitoring the bars too to make sure no one has more than the recommended 6 oz. of wine or beer a day? Checking those soda cards? Or is unlimited consumption of calories in liquid form acceptable?

It's vacation. Please. Concentrate on enjoying yourself and stop acting like the food police, judge and jury.

Excellent point...the best in this thread, IMHO.

People who are so judgemental that they are concerned what OTHER people are eating must be dreadfully miserable in everyday life.

The Golden Fleece surcharge restaurant was the best I have encountered on any cruise. Steaks as good as the Palm. Wonderful Dover Sole and very nice starters and soup. People acted like they were in a fine restaurant and did not see any gluttons, inapproprately dressed or loud passengers. Nice background music that was unobtrusive and pleasant waiters. We ate there 4 times because the main dining room truned us off. Too many people in shorts. To many who looked like they were on the ship to get their money's worth in the dining room. Unavoidable not to be turned off diner seeing them. The only excuse for doubles could be the small shrimps in the shrimp cocktail in most ship's dining room.

At $60 a night for this restaurant was a bargain and my miltary discharge discount paid for it. Sorry I couldn't eat there every night. A very wide selection unlike Princess, X, or HAL.

Guess she doesn't go to the all-you-can-eat buffets either (the ones in most cities in the USA)

You can book a special cruise where there is food everywhere. Just like a planned GAY cruise, or SPORTS cruise you can just roll on board and eat your way for 7 days. Special prizes for who gained the most weight, who ate the most lobster tails, etc. I'm sure Carnival could set this up and if you organize the groups you could travel and eat free.

I have also found that some people are critical of cruises, even though they have never been on one. I have heard people say that cruises are nothing but food orgies. Interestingly, my husband and I have been on 5 cruises and have never gained any weight. We eat well, but do not gorge. We also stay very busy, excercise during cruises, use the stairs instead of the elevator often, etc. People choose what to eat on a cruise and no one forces food down their mouths.

Another criticism is that cruises are "too touristy" and that they prefer more nature oriented vacations. Yeah, yeah, I know. On the other hand, I have been one with nature on many cruises, and am hoping to be so again on my upcoming July cruise to Alaska.

What bothers me is not that some people do not like cruises (although don't judge until you have tried it), but that they are snobs about it, as if disliking cruising means you are culturally superior.

Amen! I work in the medical field and people who have a weight problem usually have other issues that complicate the situation.

If you feel good about the way you look and feel that's the only thing you should judge.

America is overweight, but we're also starting a very scary trend of being 5' 7" and wearing a size 0. That's not healthy and very dangerous. Especially all these young girls who think they have to look like Lindsey Lohan. icon9.gif We need to work on being "healthy" not necessarily how much we eat.

Just a social observation, but why is it more socially acceptable to get drunk and act like a jerk or an idiot than to eat too much at a buffet? I'm not saying that everyone who gets drunk acts like a jerk or an idiot, it just seems like whenever someone really gets wasted it's funny the next morning and whatever happened is chalked up to "being drunk". Like you mentioned earlier, why doesn't anyone ever worry about how much alcohol people are consuming? Why is it just the food?
