flagger Posted August 12, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2004 That you cannot do in your room. I was reading one of the cruise related blogger sites and it did strike me as funny the number of posts about the "privacy" of the balcony cabins. Sure you cannot watch the water go by or people watch while in port...but the term "get a room" might apply in any other situation. :D I did like reading about how the officer on the bridge standing in the wing on port and starboard side has a full view of most of the balconies anyway. I bet he has some good stories ;) What I'm doing is lying out there on my sea days with a drink and a good book and not having to listen to screaming kids by the pool. missbear Posted August 12, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 12, 2004 Seriously. Listen to the ocean, see what the temperature is outside, get fresh air, take a nap, read a book, listen to a CD, get a place to relax outside without worrying about chair hogs, wear a swimsuit when you'd be really unlikely to do so if people could see you closer, and if you get a balcony with some privacy...well-I'm sure you can figure it out. pjsugg Posted August 12, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 12, 2004 While sick with pneumonia, I laid on that balcony and at least felt miserable watching the view...... It really helped me feel somewhat better. Patti
brigittetom Posted August 12, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 12, 2004 pjsugg. :( I agree with enjoying the balcony when you don't feel like being in a crowded pool area. Only drawback, it's the one cruise where I hardly met any people. That balcony was just too inviting. :)
boten Posted August 12, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 12, 2004 Having coffee from room service while watching the great inside passage scenery. Falling asleep on a warm day leaving Ketchikan to the hum of floating planes. Hope that helps :D

cechase Posted August 12, 2004 #10 Share Posted August 12, 2004 The veranda's on the Royal Suites on Mercury and Century are quite private, and the only way you can see an officer in the port or starboard wing is to lean over the rail. After dinner, some drinks, and maybe some time in the casino, we found it really great to sit on the veranda in our bath robes, sip a Bailey's over ice, listen to the water, look out at the horizon and see other ships and planes. Very nice and private experience. Oh, and romantic kisses too! Of course, we really enjoyed the veranda when coming into a port, since you can see everything that is going on. RodPat Posted August 12, 2004 #11 Share Posted August 12, 2004 I think what flagger is talking about is an article on cruise blogger. There are alot of people who claim they want privacy on their balcony and they elude to a very "private act" they will do when no one is looking. We all know that a balcony is nice to sit on and comtemplate the complexities of life. The article that he refers to was quite funny. Pat

flagger Posted August 12, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted August 12, 2004 flagger, I think that I am a fairly bright guy, but what in the world are you talking about? phil The blogger article that I read mentioned how everyone on message boards seems to post about how private the balconies are or how can they find the most private balcony on the ship. So I wondered just what people do on their balconies that they cannot be doing in their rooms that require privacy.

gkm Posted August 12, 2004 #15 Share Posted August 12, 2004 We have gotten to know some really nice passengers by being next door neighbors who we probably would not have met had we not had a balcony. We are hardly in our cabin except to change clothes and sleep. I spend most of my time when in my cabin out on the balcony. A before dinner drink is nice, and talking to our next door neighbors is nice, a nap, a good book, being able to see what's going on in port, watching the wake, or just relaxing in the sunshine are nice. When we did our Panama Canal cruise, we had an aft balcony and that was fabulous. When the gates closed around the ship, we were able to see everything that was going on without being shoved by other passengers to get a better view. When we cruised the Norwegian fjords, we had a breathtaking view of scenery starting at 4:00 a.m. in our bathrobes. That's what is so great about a balcony!:D Garry

flagger Posted August 12, 2004 Author #17 Share Posted August 12, 2004 Maybe in my youth, I might have gotten up close a personal with a bottle, but now into my past middle 30's, snuggling with wine just does not have that same appeal. What's that? Smuggling? Oh... Nevermind

Rustynail Posted August 12, 2004 #25 Share Posted August 12, 2004 We'll be on our very first balcony cruise in Jan. My understanding from reading many threads on the subject is that the balcony is most often used for smoking...........
