smoking

Port is smoking side. It's o.k. to smoke on the portside of the public lounges, as well as portside outside decks, the casino, and your stateroom and private balcony.

Smoking is never allowed in the dining rooms, theatre, or showrooms.

Porte side is the dreaded smoking side. Exceptions when the smoker does not care and lights up where they want. Celebrity ship management does not seem to do anything about it. Even on the aft deck outside the buffet they do not enforce it so it forces us non smokers to stay inside. Perhaps some one who has much more clout than I will be able to get Celebrity to react in a more appropriate fashion.

It is not just the health problems but where there is smoke there is fire and fire on a ship must be the most frightenng situation. I would love to hear some other anecdotal stories how others experience on board Celebrity ships.

I obey all smoking rules on all ships I have been on. I find it very funny that smoking is allowed only on the port side of the ship when out on deck. Give me a break! Your'e 20 miles out to sea, traveling 20 knots, into a 10 mpr wind.

WhiteStar, I am one of the people you are traveling with that smoke. Actually, I can understand it because the breeze blows the smoke to the next person on one side or another. If you are a non smoker, it can really be offensive. I am a smoker and have left because the smoke got too heavy in the corner bar of the poolarea.

I Need A Vacation, In all fairness, we follow the rules but also have never been on a cruise where someone decides to light up a cigarette on the wrong side of the ship. Aft outside of the buffet still has the port and starboard side. That still means ashtrays on the tables are smoking, no ashtrays are non smoking. This may not help. Sorry. We have always had a good expierience with this and it was harder to find a place to smoke. If there is no one you can complain to then it is a problem. Mine has always been just the opposite. Trying to find a confined corner where I could have my breakfast and have a cigarette.

Well I made the mistake of smoking on the wrong side one time. I was outside on deck. I had no idea that these rules applied to the outside areas. Some very rude senior citizens sitting twenty deck chairs upwind from me let me know (the hard way). If you see someone smoking on the wrong side of the ship, kindly let them know the rules. Don't assume they know them and just don't care. I think most people would like to play by the rules. It's really not a big deal to smoke on the smoking side.

I had someone walk up next to me and light up right beside a no smoking sign on my last cruise! I was polite, but I did point out the sign to her. The lady was very nice, apologised and walked away. I don't know how she missed the sign, but I think she just didn't know the policy. I agree with the poster who said people aren't trying to be rude, they may not be aware of the rules.

I Need A Vacation,

I know that some people are rude, but don't assume that everyone knows the rules. I smoke cigars and smoked on the green side of the ship (starboard) on our first cruise. I am very heavily tattooed and was wearing a "t" shirt so the tattoos were quite visable. I got some strange looks but no one came up to me to tell me I was on the non smoking side of the ship. My point is had someone informed me I would have either put it out or gone on the port side. Now we book a balcony (when they are available) and I smoke on the balcony. Not all smokers want to be offensive.

I don't know why people think all smokers are offensive. I walked into the Rondevous lounge. Two ladies were playing cards. They weren't smoking so I asked them from the next table if they minded if I smoked. They looked at me really funny but said no, they didn't mind. It was about that time that I realized I was on the wrong side of the ship. I apologised to the ladies, got the response that they were kind of wondering but weren't about to question me and that they thought that it was really polite of me to ask. I see no reason why people can't get along.

Boten, A wonderful breakfast. A cup of coffee, a view, and a cigarette. :D

On our cruise last summer, there were times we couldn't use our balcony because the smoke from the neighbours' balconies came right over to ours! Nothing worse than a cup of smoke in the morning when you don't smoke! If you think that smoking outside doesn't impact anyone else because you're on a moving ship, you're kidding yourself. Ever spit out of a moving car? If the backseat window is open, you'll end up gobbing all over your passengers! Same thing on a ship!

Yech! My worst story is when we rented a condo for a week and the owner had purchased a mattress, just the day before, from a friend of his who smoked. All week I doused the thing with air freshener, but still it gave me a headache and a horrible sore throat. When we turned the keys in, boy did I make it clear we weren't pleased.

On the M-class ships in their casinos, there is a small area of slot machines with signs posted saying "NO SMOKING AREA". Every single time we went into that area, it was filled with smoking passengers playing the machines. Once, my husband went up to a man who was sitting at a machine right next to the sign and said, "sir, this is the non-smoking area of the casino" and the man looked at my husband and said, "tough $h t". and continued to puff away. The next day I saw two elderly women smoking in that area and I politely pointed to the sign and said this was an area for non smokers. Both of them said that until someone from the casino told them to get out, they were going to continue to stay there and smoke. I went to the casino manager and asked why they don't enforce the no smoking area and he said it was impossible and it's just posted that way in order to comply with Celebrity's policy to provide an area for non-smokers but that they never enforce the rule. That's pretty sad.

Sadly all too few smokers realise and certainly dont give a damm just how ill some people are made by the mere whiff of a cigarette 20feet away out in the open air

I know it sounds crazy but if you are allergic to cigarette smoke thats just how minute a sample it takes to make you ill

Smoking on a balcony next to non smokers is total hell for many

I thoroughly agree Celebrity and all cruise lines should take the matter a darn site more seriously

It was the one thing that was wonderful about Renaissance .....the total no smoking ......their customer service agents were rubbish though and that was the start of a slippery slope to ruin

Haven't seen a good "Smoking" thread in a while. Was starting to miss them;). As a smoker I ensure that I do not light up in a prohibited area and because of the "Balcony" issue would make some effort to accomodate a neighbor that advised me in an reasonable manner that it bothered them. That being said, one of my neighbors on our last cruise (first time it ever happened) complained loudly and often, but never directly. Needless to say, it got her nowhere and only resulted in making us both somewhat uncomfortable. I'll probably get flamed here but must say that I NEVER heard of anyone getting "ill" from tobacco smoke in an unconfined area until a few years ago. To keep things in perspective, I've rarely seen this issue being "acted out" in six cruises. Sort of like the "dress code" debates - the reality is that the overwhelming majority of passengers do dress in accordance with the standards of the cruise line and most smokers and non-smokers get along just fine.

If smoking was not harmful then it would be a non issue, except for those who get ill from smelling smoke. The fact is smoking can make people ill and while most smokers will be respectful of the rules I still have seen not one word on this thread with respect to the fire hazards associated with smoking. I live in British Columbia where a number of forest fires are started from smokers. The poster who said that smoking on deck with a stiff breeze is not a problem does not appreciate that a hot ember will travel that distance as well.

I would like to ask the smokers what they think about the fire hazards of smokers on a ship at sea?

Sad to say but those posters who indicated that Celebrity management will not deal with the smoking issue are correct. Celebrity needs to be fair to everyone. I thought that cigars were restricted to cabins and Michael's lounge only. Finally ashtrays are very portable and smokers do take them aft for breakfast on the non smoking side of the ship. Sad but true again.
