SuzansCruzin Posted June 3, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2007 I've read good things on these boards about the Island Wings tour, but my TA recommended the combination boat/float plane tour. Any thoughts on which is better?:)
bluedevil72 Posted June 3, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 3, 2007 I've not done the combo tour but doing the tour by air with Michelle and Island Wings was great. I would recommend it to anyone.
tbenson81 Posted June 3, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Take the air only tour. Too much time is wasted on the ship just getting into the fjords.
Budget Queen Posted June 3, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 3, 2007 I too like the flights, just superb for viewing the fjords. IF you have a lot of time in Ketchikan, the combo trips have had some good reviews. Frankly it would make a difference IF your TA has done this tour??? Or why is this their recommendation??? With short port times, the longer combo tour, may be all you can do?? Ketchikan is definately worthwhile to spend an hour walking about.
SuzansCruzin Posted June 3, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted June 3, 2007 The TA felt that whatever you didn't see by plane, you would then see by boat. We are in port from 7am to 5pm. The boat/plane option was through the cruise ship and I think there was an early morning(7:45am) time available. I am still waiting to hear back from Island Wings to see their availability. :)
halbfl2 Posted June 3, 2007 #6 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Check out SeaWind for your Ketchikan floatplane trip. They got a rave review from a just-back cruiser on this thread. Also, I believe they are less expensive. Nice, young couple.:)
PDAZ Posted June 3, 2007 #7 Share Posted June 3, 2007 I really liked the boat trip. It didn't take too long to get there, as the boat moved at a pretty good pace until we reached the fjords. Being on the boat allowed us to get up close to the waterfalls.
Bucky3 Posted June 3, 2007 #8 Share Posted June 3, 2007 We don't fly, so we did just the RT boat, and we thought it was one of the highlights of our trip. Scenery is beautiful, and we stopped to observe a bear, a mink, and an eagle's nest as well. Once into the fjord area we went at a slow pace observing waterfalls and the gorgeous scenery. We would do this excursion again.
candlelady Posted June 3, 2007 #9 Share Posted June 3, 2007 We just returned from Alaska and did the floatplane with Michelle at Island Wings and LOVED it! Michelle's great and the scenery was beautiful! I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
DougH Posted June 3, 2007 #10 Share Posted June 3, 2007 Another vote for Michelle and Island Wings. I flew with her a couple of weeks ago and it was great. Would do it again in a heartbeat :) Doug
SuzansCruzin Posted June 4, 2007 Author #11 Share Posted June 4, 2007 Thanks everyone. I think we will try the flightseeing. As I am not sure Michelle will be able to accomodate us, any negatives to using Sea Wind that you know of? I know they have been recommended on this forum, but just wondering if anyone has heard of or had a negative experience with them.
cjnky Posted June 4, 2007 #12 Share Posted June 4, 2007 If I hadn't been able to go with Island Wings, I would NOT have hesitated to go with Seawinds. In fact, I'd love to have time to do both! ;)
